Is there anyone here that possibly have two degrees; one in Information Science/Studies and another in Business? I'm curious about the combination of these fields. I have a masters degree in MLIS and I'm interested in pursuing MBA with specialization in the book trade/publishing. I wanted to know if someone here is doing something similar?

I knew someone back when I was in library school who had worked in the business world (specifically, finance) for many, many years and was getting the LIS as a second career with the idea of becoming a business librarian. And I know someone who got the LIS first and now is considering business school because she's gotten fed up with the library world. But I haven't met anyone who did both concurrently. Good luck if you do decide to pursue this; it sounds interesting.

Thank you so much. One of my professors in library school constantly kept telling me for years to go into business. I can never forget him saying that if he could turn back time he would have gone into business because he believes with where information is going today there are so many more opportunities for Information Professionals to be involved in unorthodox positions.

I've just been so used to being spoon-fed in an educational institution or in an educational-structure to learn things so trying to realign how I look at information in other contexts other than the academic field (which is all I know) is kinda hard. I'm hoping going to business school, mixing with business minded people, learning from other fields, getting exposed to interpreting business data could allow me to potentially venture into that path of information/business.

I also joined AIIP's association last year and A LOT of independent info professionals come from business backgrounds. It seems the ideal structure for info professionals (in my opinion) is to have business AND technical knowledge (computer science).

It's inspiring to me to hear about how others have gained skills in various fields with LIS. The only skills I've gained were academic ones, mainly research, managing the automation of a small library from scratch, dealing with students' research 1-on-1, lecturing on research and some MARC records/database work.
