So, reading anything good this month?

My reading list for August so far is Blacksad: Amarillo, Pretty Deadly: The Bear, Mae, vol. 1, and Black Hammer, vol. 1 (thanks to recommendations from this group).

Also, in an effort to explore manga (I have very little experience with Japanese comics), I've picked up Barefoot Gen, vol. 1 and Silver Spoon, vol. 1 from the library. Manga suggestions welcome!

Finished Harley Quinn: Die Laughing last week and then picked up Harley Quinn: Joker Loves Harley today. Also have a few other things floating around to read, preferably sooner rather than later :)

>1 Euryale:
I can recommend to you some good manga that I am reading:

Pluto - A remake of an Astro Boy storyline;
Battle Angel Alita - It is like spin off of Neuromancer;
Guardians of Louvre - Crossbreed of Manga and European comics;
Lone Wolf and Cub - Ronin samurai in feudal Japan. Total classic.

1> Barefoot Gen, i enjoyed it, it's heavy though, I haven't got around to the other volumes yet

3> I second Pluto, I really liked it. I saw a trailer the other day for a Battle Angel Alita live action moive, haven't read the manga yet though.

1> Also for Manga, I'd recommend:

A Bride's Story - Art is amazing.
20th Century Boys - just my all time-favorite
One Piece - crazy popular in Japan, pirates, heroism, etc.

Lots of others depending on the genre you like/what you're looking for

I just picked up #1's for Black Badge by Matt Kindt and The Magic Order by Mark Millar, and am re-reading Watchmen. I also picked up the benefit anthology Where We Live. And like with any of my reading piles, I'm way behind, so I am trying to read Barrier even though the five-issue series has been completed.

Recently read Heavy Vinyl, which had good artwork and characters. The plot was interesting but it seemed to end just as it was starting to really get going. Hopefully there will be additional volumes in the future so the storyline can get resolved.

I like those manga recommendations. I'm particularly a fan of Lone Wolf and Cub, and A Bride's Story. I just read my first from New Lone Wolf and Cub and liked it.

Right now I'm reading Strong Female Protagonist Book Two, after enjoying the first one. Interesting take on issues of how to help the world versus how to make a happy life.

I finished up August with The Girl From the Other Side, vol. 1 (another manga) and Aya: Love in Yop City.

Oh, I liked both of those, Euryale. What did you think of them?

The Girl From the Other Side is cute so far, but I don't have a good sense of the plot from just one volume. I like it enough to keep reading.

The Aya series I love, and I hope there's more to come. Looks like I've caught up to the end of the English translations.

>12 Euryale: Good to hear. I liked the second Girl from the Other Side, and you inspired me to find out that #3 and #4 are out, so I'll track those down. I've read two other Ayas, and liked those, too.

I greatly enjoyed Mimi Pond's graphic memoirs, Over Easy and The Customer Is Always Wrong, about her time as a waitress in an Oakland, California diner in the late 1970's-early 1980's. A great cast of colorful characters, and it really captures the era. (It doesn't hurt that I know the neighborhoods she writes about.)

Not a comic, but a novella about female comic characters/tropes - I just finished reading The Refrigerator Monologues,which I enjoyed. Heavy stuff, worth the time though.

>13 jnwelch: I think #5 comes out in late September.

>15 brianjungwi: That definitely a worthwhile read.
