I saw the link to this group/challenge on LT's facebook and it seems good to tackle my ever-growing TBR list, specially the books that I got when I was reading a lot, so I decided to give it a try. I'm not sure what exactly constitutes an old tome, but I'll try to read books bought in 2012 or before.
For 2018 my overall target is 15 books (which is what I managed to accomplish last year - but I might update if my commute increases). I'm going to set a target of 12 older books (one per month), and because I like maths, I'll try to spread them as follows: 1 book from 2012, 1 from 2011, 2 from 2010, 3 from 2009, and 5 from before 2009 (my consistent tracking of acquired dates stops at 2009).
My TBR list is 256+ (there are quite a few inherited books that have never been catalogued). I did some math, and the 256 books and my current pace means I have books until 2035 (or 2044 if I keep acquiring them at my current rate). So I aim to at least end the year with no more books that I have now.
And here's the ticker:
Books read:
1. The last unicorn by Peter S. Beagle: finished 12.jan, acquired 2012
2. Breve historia dos tractores em ucraniano by Marina Lewycka, finished 31.jan, acquired in 2011
3. Searoad by Ursula K. Le Guin, finished 13.feb, acquired in 2010
4. Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett, finished 08.jul, acquired in 2012
5. Nebula Award Stories 2, finished 04.aug, acquired in 2008
6. Record of Lodoss War: The Lady of Pharis by Ryo Mizuno, finished 05.aug, acquired in 2009
7. Mascaras do Destino by Florbela Espanca, finished 06.aug, acquired in 2008
8. Exile (graphic novel) by R. A. Salvatore, finished 07.aug, acquired sometime between 2006 and 2008
9. City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau, finished 26.aug, acquired in 2011
10. A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson, finished 11.sep, acquired in 2005 (more specifically Christmas 2005, the gift receipt was still inside)
11. Mother Ocean, Daughter Sea by Diana Marcellas, finished 7.nov, acquired in 2010
12. Sojourn (graphic novel) by R. A. Salvatore, finished 8.nov, acquired in 2010
13. The Crystal Shard (graphic novel) by R. A. Salvatore, finished 18.nov, acquired sometime between 2007 and 2008
14. Putas - novo conto português e brasileiro by Ana Paula Inacio, finished 25.dec, acquired (probably) in 2009
Fibonacci twist:
2012: 2/1
2011: 2/1
2010: 3/2
2009: 2/3
<2009: 5/5

Welcome and good luck with the Fibonacci approach to ROOTing! :)

Welcome to the ROOTers, Marta.
I'm not sure what exactly constitutes an old tome
Your challenge, your rules. Some people count every book bought before 2018/01/01. My rules are: I count every book that has been on the shelves for more then 6 months.

Welcome and good luck rooting! I count any book that has been on my shelf more than 30 days.

Welcome and happy reading!

2. Breve historia dos tractores em ucraniano by Marina Lewycka, acquired in 2011
Finished the second ROOT of the year, just in time to be ahead of schedule :)

Well done!

I won an e-book through Early Reviewers and was thinking of starting that one next, but it has yet to arrive, so I'll start Searoad by Ursula K. Le Guin today - acquired in 2010.

Third ROOT finished: Searoad by Ursula K. Le Guin - which I enjoyed :)
Now, off to read the Early Reviewers one.

I wasn't sure I was going to be able to finish it this month, because of all the work and traveling, but I did it! Really liked this one.
ETA: Oh wait, not a ROOT - It was acquired in 2013. Foiled by my own arbitrary rules.
17connie53
LOL, But you read one that is almost a ROOT. I had to read your first post again to see what your rules are. Very interesting.
18floremolla
>16 quigui: think of it as 'root prevention', Marta - it won't be on next year's TBR list ;)
19quigui
>17 connie53: I had been meaning to read that one for such a long time, that it felt that it would fit.
>18 floremolla: Root prevention, I like that! It definitely counts towards the goal of reading more than I acquire (which I'm failing
The book I picked to read next is definitely a ROOT - City and the mountains by Eça de Queirós - it has been on the bookshelves for almost 10 years.

After 2 months of barely making any progress with Cidade e as Serras (work hasn't helped), I've given up on it, and started Guards! Guards!. Maybe I'll be able to catch up :)
21rabbitprincess
>20 quigui: Good idea! You can always go back to the other book later if you want :) Have fun with the Terry Pratchett!
22quigui
>21 rabbitprincess: I'll eventually read that one, but I'll probably invest in an audio version.
All done with Guards! Guards!, which I enjoyed, and hopefully broke my reading block.
I'll be continuing with the city watch sub-series, but not just now. I'm going to read Nebula Award Stories two next, which has been around since 2008, because I've been craving some science fiction.

Finished two roots this weekend, Nebula Award Stories 2 and The Record of Lodoss War, finally getting back on track.
25quigui
Another ROOT finished, Mascaras do Destino by Florbela Espanca.
26quigui
Yet another ROOT, Exile (graphic novel) done, and finally on track again. Reading graphic novels is a great way to speed up the process. I still have 2 more books on this series to read, and I'll probably get to that in the next months.
27MissWatson
Great progress!
28quigui
9th ROOT finished, City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau.
29quigui
10th ROOT finished, A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson, and this one should have been read a while ago. Some of the science in this needs an update.
I'm going on holidays for about 2 weeks, and I'm taking only ROOTs with me (and ebooks), so I should be able to get to my goal of 12 ROOTs (to manage that Fibonnacci twist I'll need to read more than the 12 though).

Enjoy your holidays and your ROOT reading!
I agree, it would be nice to have an updated edition of A Short History of Nearly Everything.

Thanks! I ended up not reading that much during the holidays - I was doing an architecture camp, and it was more work than I was expecting.
33connie53
>32 quigui: That sounds very interesting. I think I would skip reading too.
34quigui
>33 connie53: It was very interesting and my pick of book wasn't the best. I've only just finished it, taking me almost 2 months (!!!). But I'm still on track for my 12 ROOTS, and my plan is to read a couple of graphic novel I have collecting dust at home.
36MissWatson
Congratulations on reaching your goal!

Another ROOT finished, beyond the target of total ROOTs, but I'm still trying to finish that fibonnacci twist I got myself into :)
