Lily, I highly recommend two albums. The first is the soundtrack to the Julie Taymor film "Accross the Universe" and features amazing new renditions of Beatles tunes, arranged by Taymor's husband-composer Elliot Goldenthal. The second record is Kashmir: The Symphonic Led Zepplin. The London Philharmonic puts together an amazing collection of Zep tunes with the full power of the London Phil - an amazing recording!

Thrin: I read the Levitin book this year and highly enjoyed it. I loved the fresh perspective from a neuroscientist who is a lover of music of all kinds. And his examples are well-articulated, universal, and highly effective, from McCartney to Bruce to Beethoven.
Another great read along these lines is Robert Jourdain's "Music, the Brain, and Ecstasy" that I would highly recommend. Another is Anthony Storr's "Music and the Mind," though the Jourdain is closer to the informal feel of the Levitin while still delivering exciting observations from piles of research.
I've also just purchased Oliver Sacks' "Musicophilia" which I'm dying to read.
