There are many interesting Cabell items still available from the Oriel collection. As of today there are about two dozen items signed and/or inscribed by Cabell, and about a dozen with the bookplate, stamp or initials of Montgomery Evans II, friend of Cabell, Arthur Machen, Lord Dunsany, Aleister Crowley and others https://archives.lib.siu.edu/?p=creators/creator&id=366
Evans's bookplate was designed by Sidney Sime, famous weird artist associated with Dunsany, Machen and Wm Hope Hodgson among others.

To see what's there view this googledoc https://docs.google.com/document/d/13R47twSHneNBkMgY2r_SVQK2gJ7vbS2z6lOplSnI-bA/...

To inquire about availability or price contact Nick at nickbconfino at hotmail.com

(full disclosure -- I get nothing out of this. just spreading the word)

Love Sime's work, especially the illustrations for which Dunsany wrote original stories, published as The Book Of Wonder aka The Last Book of Wonder.

James Branch Cabell List - Confino/Oriel

For offers, bids or questions contact Nick at nickbconfino at hotmail dot com

This is what’s currently available, as of 2 Oct 2017, from a large Cabell collection that was assembled in the 1930s-1950s, in part by incorporating other collections. About two dozen of these items are signed and/or inscribed by James Branch Cabell. In addition, about a dozen of these items bear the bookplate, stamp or initials of Montgomery Evans II (1901-1954), collector, literary catalyst, and friend of Cabell, Arthur Machen, Lord Dunsany, Walter de la Mare, Aleister Crowley, and many other literary figures of the time. https://archives.lib.siu.edu/?p=creators/creator&id=366
Evans’s book plate was designed by Sidney Sime, who illustrated many of Lord Dunsany’s books and also did work for Arthur Machen and William Hope Hodgson. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidney_Sime

Of course the number of Cabell-signed, and Evans-related items will drop as things are sold.

I'm glad there is some interest here. It is an extensive collection as my great-grandfather was a rare book collector for decades and his primary focus was Cabell. Please feel free to message me here or email me at my hotmail account with books you are interested in and I am happy to put together really fair prices for Cabell fans. Since my great-grandfather was such a huge fan, I feel these books should end up in more Cabell collectors' hands.

I PM'd here and he responded with prices, I'm awaiting a final response of an offer I made. Guessing he's away for a bit, perhaps for the US holiday -- not to mention busy with those 5 recent sales. I'm going to hang in for a bit.

Hi everyone, sorry about the confusion.

Elenchus: I seemed to have sent two messages from me to...me! Instead of you. Just my confusion with the platform of this message board. My fault. I just re-sent you the message I wrote days ago and please let me know if you got it.

lansingsexton: Not sure why the Hotmail isn't working. I check it daily and have not received new messages. Crypto-Willobie just tested out the e-mail and I received it and responded just fine. So just to confirm that e-mail is nickbconfino@hotmail.com. I also wrote you an e-mail from Gmail.

Let me know if these work and sorry for the confusion.

What is the design supposed to be? A water creature looking back at a fairy with a setting or rising sun? I've seen it so many times now in these various Cabell pieces but can't quite make out what it is.

17elenchus
Redigeret: okt 13, 2017, 10:07 pm

Note it's a Black Sun. Based on Sime's mythical and fantastical images for Dunsany as noted in >5 elenchus:, presumably not an allusion to Nazi concept, but the older alchemical sun.

I'm pleased to learn of it. amdew11 was motivated to find good homes for those titles, and not merely buyers, and that resonates with me.
