Why actor's don't have 'Read 52 books this year' as a goal.

I looked at my read list for this year on my bookcrossing profile. It does not contain 40 books. And many of those listed are children's books. Even if I count the scripts I've read this year, that would only bump it up to 6 more or so. I even had a person send me an unsolicited consolation about my pathetic little 'have read' list. The fact is, when you act and (for some of us) still have a full-time day job, your first priority is the production. I cherish my weekends, spending hours in bed reading until forced out by hunger or rehearsal (or both). I just don't have the luxury of spending cozy nights with a book as often as I'd like. I can't read during rehearsal and I'm too paranoid about missing an entrance to read backstage during a run of a show (though I enviously watch other cast members pull that off).

What are your reading habits? How do you manage to keep a bookish life in the midst of your theatrical one?

I have found a time to read during a show and not worry about missing an entrance. I spend a stretch of time behind a set piece in the first act of 'Three Men on a Horse'. The area behind said set is beautifully well lit to look like daylight. I have a stool and a book tucked under the set's 'stairwell' and get in a few pages until the blackout. It's super-duper!

No I don't have a goal about what I read anymore but I do have a huge stack of unread books that must be read before I die. My day jobs are transient at best so I don't have that pressure but I do have an eleven year old son who must be cared for so reading time is limited. If I'm backstage I prefer to listen to the monitor and sense the audience reactions so I rarely read then. I was away in Maine on a regional recently and managed to read through 8 or 9 books in a month, even with rehearsals, socializing with the other actors and cooking there seem a world of time in the actor-house to read and listen to music. No other distractions I guess.

I somehow manage to be both an actress (with a day-job) and a compulsive reader. But I'm one of those people who can pull off reading back stage or during rehearsals. I'm not quite sure how I manage to keep one ear/eye on cues and one on my book, but I've yet to miss a cue.

Granted, I tend to do most of my reading late at night, when I'm coming down from rehearsal or performance.

Over the past week, the only reading I've been able to do backstage has been in preparation for my next audition for the Upstate Shakespeare Festival.

I am an actress and I spend six days a week on 6-4 hour rehearsals (plus school) and I still read about 4 books a week. Is it really super hard to read backstage? I read backstage during rehearsals.

Ooh, I can't read backstage - I just can't concentrate on either the book or the play that way. Unless I have an entire act offstage, it's hopeless.

I also had to make myself a personal rule: if I'm working on something, and I'm not offbook yet, no pleasure-reading allowed...

I try to stick to that rule, too. I'm not always so disciplined, though. :/

I'm the same way about needing a whole act off to be able to read, which hasn't happened in a long time. I can't read backstage during a show because I am completely terrified of missing a cue.

I grew up with 7 younger siblings so I have long since learned how to compartmentalize. Selective hearing, I guess is the key to doing this. I can read and not be woken from my reading state by just about anything except for things that I've synchronized myself to such as:

- children crying
- stage manager's voice
- someone yelling: Fire
- my name or my character name, when spoken by director or sm
- a call to or from break
- certain lines or points in the script, music that indicates a cue

I am careful to always give myself plenty of time to prepare before going on, to put the one story out of my head so that I can fully devote myself to the one onstage.

I generally get through 3-4 books(depending on length) a week, + a play.

But then, I was a voracious reader long before I was an actor.
