Cool, thanks for that. There are real limits to the theoretical life of DNA. It has a half life under ideal conditions of 521 years, so total destruction would occur between 6 and 7 million years, but the estimate is that it would be unreadable by 1.5 million years. The oldest extant DNA available to date is from a 700,000 year old horse.
