I didn't join the 100 book challenge for 2016, but I actually finished reading 100 books by the end of the year. The two years before I finished 100 books, twice! So here I am again just hoping to read 100 more.

I have been working my way through Andrew Lang and H. G. Wells for a couple years now. I hope to finish what I have of them this year. Also, I have a reading list on my website, www.rootstwigger.com, that has a basket list of books I am working on.

So here we go:
1. Lang, Mrs. Andrew - The Strange Story Book
2. Anderson, Laurie Halse - Forge
3. Anderson, Laurie Halse - Ashes (Seeds of America Book 3)
4. Johnston, Charles H.L. - Famous Privateersmen and Adventures of the Sea
5. Anonymous - Tales of Romance based upon a book edited by Andrew Lang.
6. Ethridge, Kristen - Storm Surge: Life Lessons I Learned from Hurricane Ike and How You Can Rise Above Life’s Storms
7. Wells, H. G. - The Passionate Friends
8. Fenn, George Manville - Mad A Story of Dust and Ashes
9. Colum, Padraic - The Boy Who Knew What The Birds Said
10. Charles River Editors - Jamestown and the Massachusetts Bay Colony: The History and Legacy of the Settlement of Colonial New England and Virginia

I have been collecting Avi for years, and found a bunch at a penny apiece on Amazon. But the shipping was huge. Another dozen to go!

53. The Humour of Homer and Other Essays by Samuel Butler
54. The Patriarchal Age by Charles F. Pfeiffer
55. Sir Walter Scott and the Border Minstrelsy by Andrew Lang
56. How to Raise Children for Christ (Updated Edition): A Guide for Excellent Christian Parenting by Andrew Murray

60. Introduction to the Compleat Angler by Andrew Lang
61. The Chronic Argonauts by H. G. Wells
62. The Dream by H. G. Wells

Some of the touchstones were inaccurate so I removed the tags. The Time Machine is close enough for The Chronic Argonauts.

It was one of Richard Harding Davis's anniversary and I picked up this additional title for the author I began reading in 2015 with Lang and Wells. Davis is complete again and Lang's end is almost in sight. All good things come to an end.

69. Myth, Ritual and Religion – Volume 1 by Andrew Lang

It seems I have saved all the difficult Andrew Lang books for last. Finally I can just about see the end of them. H.G. Wells may take me the rest of the year to finish. I will keep on plugging away at these two authors.

This was a particularly good novel based on the Life of Jesus Christ.
90. Keeping Tryst A Tale of King Arthur’s Time by Annie F. Johnston
The Legend of the Bleeding-heart by Annie F. Johnston
The Little Colonel by Annie F. Johnston
Lovely story. I'm looking forward to the rest of the Little Colonel series.

I didn't count each title as part of my challenge. I am reading through the author, and some works are shorter than book-length.

91. The Little Colonel at Boarding-School by Annie F. Johnston

Tales of Troy and Greece by Andrew Lang. This is a subset of the next title.
98. Tales of Troy: Ulysses, the sacker of cities by Andrew Lang
99. The Odyssey Done into English prose translated by Andrew Lang and others.

Which leaves me with two more Andrew Lang titles to complete my own Odyssey through Lang's works, though of those one was co-authored with Henry Rider Haggard whom I've read.

105. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
106. A Wind in the Door by Madeleine L’Engle
107. A Swiftly Tilting Planet by Madeleine L’Engle
108. Many Waters by Madeleine L’Engle
109. An Acceptable Time by Madeleine L’Engle

I have so grown to love L'Engle's time quintet that I now read these books annually.

110. The Little Colonel: Maid of Honor by Annie F. Johnston
111. Mary Ware in Texas by Annie F. Johnston
The Shape of Things to Come by H. G. Wells

The Shape of Things to Come is considered to be sci-fi. The main science appears to be political science. It is a made up history of the world from 1933 to 2106. While this might have been interesting in 1933, in the year 2017 it can be hazardous to your health. I stopped reading 50% of the way through. I read for pleasure and I was not pleased with this book. If I want to read fake news I can watch the evening news.

112. Mary Ware’s Promised Land by Annie F. Johnston
113. Mildred’s Inheritance Just Her Way; Ann’s Own Way by Annie F. Johnston
114. Miss Santa Claus of the Pullman by Annie F. Johnston

I am enjoying all the Annie Fellows Johnston books. Miss Santa Claus of the Pullman is a particular joy. Keep it in mind if you have children to read to around Christmas.

116. The Quilt that Jack Built; How He Won the Bicycle by Annie F. Johnston

119. My Promised Land by Ari Shavit
120. Songs Ysame by Annie F. Johnston
121. The Story of Dago by Annie F. Johnston
122. The Story of the Red Cross as told to The Little Colonel by Annie F. Johnston

Two of these books were especially appropriate for this week. My Promised Land gives the history of all the various crises in the history of the Zionist movement. This week a new crisis came to the forefront. Messianic Israelis have been banned from getting marriage licenses unless they go before a Rabbinic court and deny their Messiah.

The Story of the Red Cross was apropos to the relief work being done this week with Hurricane Harvey.

123. Travelers Five Along Life’s Highway by Annie F. Johnston
124. Two Little Knights of Kentucky by Annie F. Johnston

This concludes my readings of Annie F. Johnston.

125. After the Flood by Bill Cooper

Cooper began with the Table of Nations in Genesis 11 and 12, and tried to disprove the historicity of the Bible using secular sources. He expected that 40% confirmation of the people listed in that list of nation founders to be a reasonable confirmation, due to the length of time in which records could have been destroyed. Amazingly he found confirmation of the Bible for 99% of the cases.

126. Early Kings of Norway by Thomas Carlyle

Carlyle's history of the Scandinavian countries more or less picks up where Cooper's left off.

Continuing with Charles Dudley Warner:
134. Education of the Negro by Charles Dudley Warner
135. England by Charles Dudley Warner
136. Equality by Charles Dudley Warner
137. Fashions in Literature by Charles Dudley Warner

As you can see I have been reading Warner for some time and have just gotten down to his "F.." titles. I am finding his books a little interesting, but also seeing some side tracks to read on similar titles.

138. American Newspaper by Charles Dudley Warner
139. The Gilded Age, Part 1. by Charles Dudley Warner and Mark Twain

The Gilded Age, Part 1. was an interesting read. It is the only work that Mark Twain worked in collaboration with another writer. I bought the complete work and will read it in its entirety.

140. On Horseback by Charles Dudley Warner

141. A Short History of the World by H. G. Wells

I've been working on H. G. Wells for nearly three years now. This was one of his most readable works, from my point of view anyway. It would be a good auxiliary book for a Western Civilization class.

142. The Golden House by Charles Dudley Warner

142. How Spring Came in New England by Charles Dudley Warner

143. The Gilded Age — Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner

The Gilded Age is the only work in which Mark Twain collaborated with another author. It is a spectacular effort on the part of Charles Dudley Warner who wrote the last sixty chapters.
