Well, I've read all of Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse books, all of Kim Harrison's "The Hollows" novels, Laurell K. Hamilton's books, the YA novels by Stephanie Meyer and Rachel Caine, and more Buffy serials than I care to admit to.

Are there any other great authors of vampire fiction that we haven't "discovered" yet? Any series that is a must-read?

(Oh, yeah, have read Mary Janice Davidson's Undead series and P.N. Elrod's as well.)

I'm not up on the latest writers of vampire fiction, but there are two authors I've read and enjoyed that are absent from your list.

Tanya Huff's Blood Books series is amazing fun, and creepy as hell in spots. She makes you laugh the whole way through by the way she just nails human nature, while at the same time telling a thoroughly serious (often downright frightening) story. She also has a trilogy out with the same vampire in it: Smoke and Shadows, Smoke and Mirrors, and Smoke and Ashes. I haven't read them yet, though.

And no collection of vampire fiction can possibly be complete without the Vampire Chronicles and New Tales of the Vampiresby Anne Rice. You'll absolutely fall in love with her characters, and her style of writing is just gorgeous, lyrical and compelling. Totally addictive. :)

He's not new, but not very well known - have you tried Michael Romkey? I, Vampire was excellent, and I also enjoyed Vampire Virus and Vampire Hunter, the other less so. Vampire Princess was almost too violent, even accounting for the fact that it's a vampire book. The ... impalement was a little too graphic.

Bratprince,

Oooh....good suggestions! I'm off to the bookstore to track them down. Although it gets mixed reviews, but I LOVED Sunshine by Robin McKinley and, it's hard to find but worth it, Delicate Dependency by Michael Talbot who could easily have inspired today's current vampire authors.

Any more suggestions? I am itching for more ideas!
Thanks.

I would certainly suggest Melissa de la Cruz's books, Blue Bloods and Masquerade, Amelia Atwater-Rhodes' vampire books (my favorite of hers is Shattered Mirror), Kresley Cole's A Hunger Like No Other and No Rest for the Wicked and J.R. Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

The first two authors are young adult writers and the last two authors write paranormal romances.

edited to add

If you like vampire stories with a sense of humor I would suggest Katie Maxwell's Got Fangs? and Circus of the Darned for young adults and her adult vampire romances of the same vein (pun intended) that she's written under the name Katie MacAlister.

Depends what you mean by new? Kim newman aka Jack Yoevil's Genevieve series might be of interest / new to you. I've only read one but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I see you've already got Jim Butcher's Harry dresden books in your catalog, so I don't need to recommened them. Although there isn't a vampire protagonist his ongooing battle against/with the various courts is pretty well done and features in most of the later books of the series.

As well as all the series mentioned I also like Barb & C.J. Hendee Noble Dead series: Dhampir, Thief of Lives, Sister of the Dead and Traitor to the Blood.

Thank you all ever SO much! This list should last me a few months...

Just finished Stephenie Meyer's latest, Eclipse, and am relieved to see she has two more books in the series in the works. I appreciate you all suggesting both YA and adult books.

Keep those ideas coming!

Also try Susan Sizemore's series, Laws of the Blood. First one is "The Hunt." She also has another series of books, called the Primes, that are ok.

A friend who is a vampire book fiend recommended Keri Arthur's Full Moon Rising which I believe is the start of a series. I haven't read it yet, but I recently mooched it.

HA!! I just got my hands on three Keri Arthur books and was going to ask in this thread about her - and there she is. and I was hoping to mooch the first (of course I didn't get the first book) but now I am not so sure.

Has anyone read them?

Has anybody read The Vampire Hunter D books? I know nothing about them, but have recently aquired numbers 1-6. Just wondering about some opinions.

Wheat,

I've only read the first one, but do want to continue. It is definitely unique. I felt the author created a fascinating alternate reality that's easy to plunge into. I think you get a unique flavor from Japanese literary culture, kind of literature crossed with manga. Remember: these books are translated into English. I found it fun to figure out what they meant in some places. I'll be interested to hear what you think.

Lman,

Haven't read Keri Arthur's books yet, but now I want to get them!

I enjoy Kerrelyn Sparks and her Love at Stake series. There are only 4 books thus far and one is an anthology, but they are set in modern times and I like the two different types of vampires that are depicted.

Just got Hotel Transylvania by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro at a thrift store. It is a series of books that apparently chronicles the life of a vampire named Saint Germaine. I understand there are over 15 books in the series and Yarbro is pre-Rice.

Has anyone else read the series? Any feedback on what you think?

17Antares1
nov 26, 2007, 1:44 pm

I've read all of Yarbro's Saint Germain books published up to now. Personally, I've enjoyed them all. I particularly like the way she incorporates actual historic people and events. I know some don't like the way she advances the plot through letters and such, but I find it fascinating.

Anteres1,

Thanks! I'm only half way through the first one and I do like her style so far. I am fried on Laurel K. Hamilton for now. Maybe I need to clear my vampire palette for a while........

GirlMisanthrope,

I gave up on LKH after Danse Macabre. It was soooo bad in my opinion. There was so much angsting leading up to the sex scenes whatever small mood she may have set in the beginning was lost by the time she got to the sex. The 'climax' was extremely disappointing. Not to mention about how she tied it all up so quickly at the end. I haven't read The Harlequinn. I don't plan to.

Yarbro is not a new author by any stretch (although always new to someone, I suppose!). Her St. Germain series is a classic--pretty much the only fictional vamp around for years and years, and pretty much THE bridge between Dracula and all sexy modern vamps. I adored her books when I first read them, years ago.

21Antares1

Yarbro is still writing her St. Germain series. She has a couple of new ones out. I just don't have the money right now to get them.

Just wanted to post a book I found called Daylight by Elizabeth Knox, a New Zealand author. Her books are mostly magical realism, with vampires starring in this one.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. Knox takes a while to line up all the character, giving you intricate histories. Then, in the middle of the book, she brings all those histories together, intertwining them with vampires of Italy and France. I found it lush and addictive. Once again, it is interesting to see another author's take on vampirism.

Has anyone read the The Trouble In the Forest duology by Trystam Kith? I'm reading it now and I'm wondering how others felt about it.

24Joles
maj 11, 2008, 8:59 pm

I don't think I saw L.J. Smith listed The Vampire Diaries are rather good. Although, her books about witchcraft, The Secret Circle was much better than the vampire series.

Although, when trying to reread Vampire Diaries after reading the Twilight Saga it has definitely lost something for me.

And I haven't read the series yet, but I bought a copy of Glass Houses of the Morganville Vampires Series by Rachel Caine.

As I am trying to find "new" flavors, different from Rice, LKH, and J.R. Ward, I thought I'd share two recent reads.

The Society of S by Susan Hubbard is a intriguing vampire novel told from the POV of a 13 year old girl. Once she realizes she is different from people outside her house she begins a quest to understand her family and to find her mother. Well written.

Let The Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist has been translated from Swedish to English. Well worth the effort! A unique vampire tale that will have you wondering if it's the humans or the vampires that are the monsters.

I would recommend Jennifer Armintrout. I think she has 4 books so far in the series. The Turning (Blood Ties, Book 1 was really good and I am about 100pages into Possession (Blood Ties, Book 2) and I'm not disappointed.
I've read a lot of the authors mentioned in this Topic and felt like Armintrout should be added to the list.

Raven Hart has her Savannah Vampire series that is quite good. The first one is called The Vampires Seduction I believe. I must warn that these books end on a cliff hanger and the 5th volume isn't due until the end of the year. Worth reading.
