Looking For Book Recommendations

I am fairly new to graphic novels. I got hooked on them a year ago. I love books with history such as Boxers and Saints. Any suggestions?

Do you like noir detective novels at all? Because if you do, you might like Jules Feiffer's Kill My Mother.

Fiction or nonfiction? Age level?

History- Harvey Pekar's -Not the Israel my Parents Promised Me- has Harvey's overview of Jewish history from way back when to Zionism and the formation of Israel. A really touching little book.

lilithcat I have never really gotten into nor detective novels before. There is only 1 detective series I like and it's a mystery series featuring main character Ash Rashid. At the moment I cannot remember the author's name. I think it's Culver.

pussreboots I prefer adult nonfiction but must admit I have never read a fiction graphic novel. .

Violette62 – start with Rutu Modan's Exit Wounds or The Property. They're almost non-fiction (read like it and am based on her own experiences) :)

My very first graphic novel was Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. Autobiography of a girl growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. So, there's a nonfiction recommendation.

For fiction, my favourite graphic novel series (not that I read an abundance of them, but of what I've read) is Fables by Bill Willingham. I've "touchstoned" the first volume in the series. This would be if you like fairy tales. It would be similar to Once Upon a Time, the tv show, but Fables came first. :-)

My very first exposure was the Maus books by Art Speigelman, back in the 1980s. Highly recommended. They are based on the author's parents' experience with the Holocaust.

I'd recommend anything by Marjane Satrapi, Persepolis is her first.

Did not read Graphic novels and memoirs for many years -- until they really exploded in numbers in recent years.

If you liked the myth/folklore element of Boxers and Saints, I recommend the anthology Trickster: Native American Tales.

Forget Sorrow is another book (autobiographical) dealing with Chinese history.

Some really great graphic novels about the US Civil Rights movement have come out lately: The Silence of Our Friends and March.

And here's some more history graphic novels dealing with a wide range of topics, some aimed at adults and some at teens: Laika, Lewis & Clark, The Photographer, Feynman, Logicomix, Radioactive, Dotter of Her Father's Eyes, District Comics.

If you are new to Graphic Novels make sure not skipping Alan Moore's works like Watchmen and the Swamp Thing.

Watchmen, Dark Knight Trilogy, Maus.. and interestingly Dirt Candy. Also don't forget to check out Anime; though some people might not put them under Graphic Novels.
