I received a copy of Taken Away by Ravenswood Publishing for an honest review.

The story begins with a young couple who find themselves in love with each other. Serena has a promising career as an artist and Jesse has a thriving practice as a veterinarian. She comes from a very wealthy family and a father that will do anything for his daughter. When herb dad finds out she wants to marry Jesse, he is extremely upset. He demand that Jesse sign a prenup, which Serena says is not necessary .

After they are married, Jesse realizes that his wife has become distant. She is not quite herself and he asks her one day what is wrong. Serena tells him that she is pregnant . This news makes Jesse quite happy, but senses that Serena is not.
She is not ready to be tied down with a child and have her art be taken away from her. As their little girl, Sophia, starts to get bigger, Serena becomes more distant and unhappy. One day Jesses discoveres his wife and baby are gone. He calls the police fearing they may have been kidnapped from their home . After months of no word from his wife and no clues of what happened that day, he makes a hard decision to leave and move to Iowa to take over his grandfather's veterinary practice.

At this point in the story we see Jesse at his lowest point , finally begin to put his life back together. It's been months and still he thinks of his wife and daughter constantly . What happened the day they disappeared haunts him and is heartbroken by not knowing if they are alive somewhere or if something unthinkable happened to them.

This story is about a man who has lost his family and how he is determined to move on but never giving up hope that someday he will know the truth . Patricia, the author has written a book about a man who is loving but very vulnerable to being hurt by allowing himself to fall in love again. I love how she brings Jesse to a place where his heart begins to soften as a new woman named Laura enters his like. She is a strong woman who has suffered a tragedy and is guarded around men. Can these two people ever find happiness with each other? Will the disappearance of Serena and Sophia ever be solved?

I had a very hard time putting this book down. Patricia has written such diverse characters whose lives entertwine with each other in a complex but subtle way. Her attention to the characters struggles and emotions were so powerfully written, that it is not possible to forget them.

The ending is so powerful and rich with emotion, you find yourself taking a deep breath and wonder , if you had your family "Taken Away, could you go through the emotional roller coaster that Jesse endures?
