I'm looking for a site to download books that are in the public domain and, therefore, free. I've looked at several sites, but I have no idea which one is the best to use. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are there other sites you would recommend that are not necessarily free?

Many public libraries offer access to downloadable books (Net Library and Over Drive providers).

I use Librivox http://librivox.org/

Bear in mind, though, that all readers are volunteers and the quality of reading and of recording differs. Some books are read as solo (one reader) projects, depending on the length of the book.

http://manybooks.net//
has an audio component to many (if not all) the books it offers.

Like Digifish, I'd point you towards Librivox - I've been using it since the start of the year and have found it to be generally very good with many of the readers being excellent and some of the audio books being of very high quality. Of course the added bonus of them being free of charge is always good too!

wow - this is a great site - I had no idea it existed. i am on something of a mission to read many classics that I either skipped as a kid, or read, but didn't appreciate then as much as I will now.

The Gutenberg Project has downloads; I haven't yet tried them, but was planning on it soon.

Message 11: Irisheyz77
at freeclassicadiobooks, what does it mean
(advanced text to speech) verses (human narration)?

Message 6: Bookmarque
at manybooks.net, is ebooks not audio books, at least the way I understand.

This is all great info, I can't download from home (sssllllooowww connection) but I look forward to trying both of these sites from the public library.

Thanks all for the information

>13 onyx95:

"Advanced text to speech" is computer-generated audio, whereas "human narration" is a recording of someone audibly reading the text aloud.

That is kind of what I thought, but thanks so much for letting me know for sure. I really am looking forward to checking it out more closely.....later!

I thought I saw an audio option over there on their download type drop down. Will recheck.

I thought I looked but I didn't get to the drop downs, I will check a few of them too. Thanks for the information.

Does anyone use the library service 'overdrive'. I downloaded some books but because they became
a file unto themselves and not part of itunes, I have
no idea how to load them onto my ipod. Any suggestions?

I use Overdrive all the time, but I have an MP3. The overdrive program has a special updated version "OverDrive Media Console v3.2 for Windows®," that you can download to use with ipods. My suggestion is to

1. Run the Digital Media Guided Tour on your Overdrive page from the library for a good explanation of the system.
2. Look for books that are available in the MP3 audiobook format (Vice the WMA format) ---they should be compatible with your IPod.
3. Download the updated console and see if that solves your problem.

I work in a library, and our Ipod users do not seem to have any problems downloading or listening to files. Their only complaint is that every book is not yet available in an Ipod compatible format.

Alans...forgot to add , when all else fails, (or even before that!) ask your local library staff that is sponsoring the Overdrive books for help. Most of us have received some training in the system, and we really want people to use and enjoy the books.

Thanks for your help on overdrive, I'll follow it and
see if it works.

I just discovered a really easy way to do the transfer.
You just use the transfer icon in the overdrive menu
and that asks you if you want to transfer it to your
itunes folder. I found it in my folder, now I just have
to see if I can then transfer it to my ipod. So far, so
good.

I think you can actually use that transfer icon to do the transfer to your ipod itself. I use it to transfer to my MP3 directly from the overdrive menu.
