Unpasteurized cheese

So I will be tramping about western Europe in May and really want some good cheese. Can I bring it back to the states without being busted by the food police? or do you have any suggestions about how to get it home without being manhandled by customs? Can it be mailed? It seems so unfair that we can't get good cheese in the US.

Pack it well, stick it in the luggage, say a little prayer; if busted, protest ignorance, weep, make Bambi eyes, confess nothing.

>1 varielle: I'm not sure where you live but that statement doesn't hold for my part of the country. I can get all sorts of fabulous cheese, some of them unpasteurized and organic. If you're in a place that's remote there's always igourmet.com. Here's a link to their unpasteurized cheeses: http://www.igourmet.com/search/search.asp?keywords=unpasteurized%20cheese

Enjoy your trip and happy eating!!!

All our cows are fed GMO corn and their milk is ultra-ultra pasteurized. Not dairy country for sure.

>4 varielle: Not all cheese is local though. Do you live in a real small town? If not, larger grocery stores should have at least a small section of imported cheeses. Of course, they're a fair bit more money, but the option is there.

I too have had good success with igourmet.

I have also had good success with wrapping it well and hiding it in socks in the checked luggage. You may want to take some in your carry-on, just in case one of these is discovered.

A friend was successful with shipping in a hollowed-out large wax candle.

>4 varielle: Any local heath food store should carry unpasteurized only grass fed dairy products. They are not cheap, however. Even my local Stop & Shop carries some organic grass fed dairy goods.

Good luck. I love stellarexplorer's sock idea. I wouldn't touch one that smelled like ripe cheese. LOL

Now I and my BFF are enamored of igourmet. You people are enablers. I may not have to smuggle cheese after all.

I am back - cheeseless. I ate my fill while there.

Definitely more flavor and better texture. Unfortunately I’ve recently been diagnosed with a dairy allergy so I’m off the cheese for a while. 🧀 😞

Not much wheat, beef, eggs and almonds are all off the list.

Is it lactose you have a problem with? You can buy lactase tablets - that's the enzyme that some people, er, lack. Pop one before indulging and you're good to go.

>14 varielle: Oh, that must be rough. Hope whatever it is clears up! I have heard of people suddenly developing allergies to tree nuts, and then after a few years having it just as suddenly disappear.
