October 2013’s SK Flavor of the Month – Duma Key

Hi, all. I've just found this group and am going to butt in. It has been quite some time since I read Duma Key, and I have a horrible memory for books, but I remember that I liked it very much. It was different from much of the SK I've read, but it has actually been one of my favorites.

I really liked D.K. and re-read it last year, so I won't be doing that now, but I'm happy to chat about it.

The thing that came across so well in this one is his love for his characters. Their relationships are enviable and so when he wrecks it all (and makes you watch), it is all the more wrenching.

I also remember pacing myself with this one. Savoring the dread and the suspense was really important to me, so I took breaks deliberately. It really amped up the tension.

My favourite King book, but I don't own a copy and I think I should, so that I can reread it to see if it is as good as I remember. It wasn't just the characters - it was the setting, mesmerising!

Hmmmm, I didn't like this one as much as everyone else did. Oddly I think I liked it better the first time I read it. But the setting was great, very evocative, and I did feel a connection to Edgar, Wireman, et al.

I had never read or listened to any King until I couldn't find anything worth listening to at our local library one day (small library, small selection of audiobooks) so took Duma Key. I loved it and have been happily reading/listening to King ever since. I remember Duma Key as being truly scary and was glad that I was listening to it in the car to and from work and had non-scary books to read at night.

I haven't read all of his books, but the only ones that I haven't really gotten into are the Dark Tower series - read the first, liked it, started the second, and put it down.

I finished Duma Key last month after reading most of it along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico. It will probably be on my favorites list at the end of the year.
