I recently reread “The Man Booker Prize on the Silver Screen”, an August 2nd, 2012 posting on the Man Booker Prize web site (http://www.themanbookerprize.com/feature/man-booker-prize-silver-screen). For my amusement, I searched the IMDb web site for all films based on MBP winners and short listed novels and developed. Here were my ground rules for the resulting list, which is longer than that in the MBP posting:
1. Chronological order, by Man Booker Prize year for winners (w) and short listed novels (sl)
2. Includes big screen and television films (f) designated as released on the IMDb web site (http://www.imdb.com/)
3. Search was on novel name only: (a) listed writers and plots were skimmed to ensure that films reflected the Man Booker novel of the same name; (b) any films based on a Man Booker winner or short listed novel that were renamed for released as a film are not included in this list
4. Not all of the listed films are readily available in the U.S. (or perhaps in other countries too), with “ready availability” operationalized as a listing in the U.S. Netflix DVD data base
5. No claim is made for comprehensiveness! Please feel free to correct any mistakes, and to add to the list. I would very much appreciate your posting any corrections or additions here.
I’ll post the list here in two segments (1960s-1980s, and 1990s-present).

Thanks! . . . I've definitely seen more of the films (8) than I've read of the books (3) . . . (not saying that's a good thing, just how it turns out) . . . though many of the books are ones I've MEANT to read :)

Great work, Daniel! Have you considered adding these films to each book's "Common Knowledge" section? You could also create a LibraryThing list of these books.

>7 lauralkeet: Thanks, lauralkeet. I appreciate your suggestions. I'm ignorant about both Common Knowledge and the LibraryThing list features. I'll look into both, and probably choose the option which will be least time consuming.

You left out 1969

Figures in a Landscape (1970 ∙ IMDb)

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065720/

Impossible Object (filmed in 1973 by John Frankenheimer as Story of a Love Story)

I thought I would do the long list movies as well. There are only 4.

Any Human Heart (2010 ∙ TV mini-series ) 2002
The Emperor's Children (2011) 2006
Child 44 (2014) 2008
Netherland (2013) 2008

Strangely enough 5 of the long list were also nominated for Bad sex in fiction award.

The Sea by John Banville was just made into a film this year. I saw it at the Yoronto Film Festival- it was excellent

>13 torontoc: Thanks for the addition. The Sea is an interesting choice for a film, and I look forward to seeing it.

> 6. Well I saw the film of Midnights Children and even though it’s 148 minutes I am sure it would have made a much better TV series. There are too many relevant episodes in Saleem’s life that are missing. What amazes me though is the total taking as of this week , worldwide, has been a mere $ 880 000.

Wow, that is cool. I had no idea so many were made into films.
Mr Pip was also just released as a film, and a very good one imo.

>16 LovingLit: Thank you! Mr Pip is among my favorite short-listed Bookers. I'll add it to my Netflix queue and eventually add it to the list.
