I have heard that schools have cut back on art education. What IS the state of art education in elementary education (also the higher grades)?

If I were visiting schools, would I be filling a need?

It really depends on which school district/state you're in! I've been fortunate enough to see art in every school I've ever been in, my own education and my student teaching.

In Newton, MA (a very affluent neighborhood), art was pretty integrated into the day-by-day schedule. There is a school in Acton, MA that solely focuses on how art enhances the elementary education by having it as a focal point in its curriculum. It's really interesting!

(I did my student teaching Newton, MA during grad school... and will be teaching for my first year in Virginia! :) )

I don't know about Portsmouth Public Schools (Virginia) yet... but I can fill you in in August. lol

You may come across the teachers who are all gungho about getting art into their own classrooms through different activities... (I'm one of them!) I try to teach lessons that have some art activity to go along with them. It's extra-curricular but it does make an impact for those visual learners.

We have art and expressive arts plus drama is making it's way into our school , although I get the feeling you're talking about America.

Hi, since my last posting here, I've had a lot more experience with kids. I've spent an entire week in Stockton working with all ages. The teachers helped me a lot to build momentum.

Here is a video that shows the art from my book:

I am less than articulate here. A bad day, but the filming is excellent. The colors true.
