I always take it for granted that people in political movements, especially the left, try to pump up their numbers. In a democracy, it's a good way of intimidating legislators into supporting your goals.

"Demonstrators" often try to do this too, if they think they can get away with it. There will be 1,000 people at a rally, but they'll try to claim 5,000.

Although that is now changing, for the gay thing. From the link:

"In recent years, as homosexuality has become less stigmatized, pro-gay rights groups have come around to acknowledging that a smaller percent of people identify themselves as gay than some of the early gay rights rhetoric claimed..."

Lol, in other words, they think it's safe to admit they lied before.
"Contemporary research in a less homophobic environment has counterintuitively resulted in lower estimates rather than higher ones. The Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law, a gay and lesbian think tank, released a study in April 2011 estimating based on its research that just 1.7 percent of Americans between 18 and 44 identify as gay or lesbian, while another 1.8 percent -- predominantly women -- identify as bisexual.

I am not sure how the numbers play in. If it is morally wrong, it does not matter if three quarters of the world is gay. If it is discrimination, it does not matter if there are only four gay people.

BTW my daughter is a journalist. She went to a Christian college to learn it.

If there are so few of them, what's with all the fearmongering from the preachers? Why all the hysteria about the "gay agenda"?

"They get a lot of press and a lot of hand-wringing over legislation, but they are a remarkably small part of the population."

Oh, well, just so long as "they" are a small enough minority, then maybe "we" can get away with putting them in concentration camps until "they" die out. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/05/21/north-carolina-pastor-gay-rant-starvati... Anything to show our love and civilization.

But the infection of "they" is strong, as stated in the Protocols, and often rears its ugly head in unexpected places http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/story/2012-06-01/target-gay-marriage-t-shirt...

#6 What Arctic said (except the bit about his daughter being a journalist - though mine was too for a number of years).

Having not really clicked through the article, I probably would put the number at about 3% of the population.

Having clicked through, I see that I've overestimated the portion of the population that identifies as gay. Tell my why this is important, again?

When you're fighting a great sinful evil, and people keep telling you it really isn't all that evil, it is good to think that the number of practioneers of that evil is diminimus. That way, when you get sufficient power, you can throw them into camps without that much fuss. After all, we are all aware of the "I don't want to stick my neck out" principle of human association:

"Having worked for a newspaper,...."

" I know that one of the reasons that life on the margin gets reported so heavily is that journalists themselves live, and consider themselves living, on the margins of society. These were not the A students you knew in school. They were the outsiders, the ones who didn't belong to any club. So they went and formed their own club. Singles, divorced, alcoholics -- life's backwaters."

This explains a lot.

(1) Read post 2.

(2) Ask the gay arts group "One in Ten" why they chose that name. They seem to think it's important. More generally, ask gay activists in general why they have spread the one-in-ten meme so assidiously.

So, let's see if we've got this, since you won't tell us straight out. It is important to accurately estimate the percentage of Gays in the American (world?) population because that will tell us their "political power."

Of course, fundamental rights and the access to a private sphere where "the public" has no business has nothing to do with that.

Dang, that is right. I forgot, this is a "real conservative" group where talk about traditions (whichever ones are convenient at the moment) and "Christian morals" (as exemplified in the Inquisition and by the beloved pastor I posted a link to) and, well, all the other things on which our Forefathers built this country. Thank G-d it had nothing to do with rights or opposition to an intrusive state!!

So, you think that news people are somewhat dim and socially inept?

I know, I wrote headlines.

That explains a lot.

She'll get indoctrinated like the rest of them.

However did you manage to avoid getting "indoctrinated"?

"It's the percent popularized by the Kinsey Report as the size of the gay male population."

Kinsey published 65 years ago; his data is even older that.

(Let's note in passing that data from the 1940s tells us little about America in the 21st century.)
But it's actually a misrepresentation: what Kinsey actually said is that about 10% of men had spent at least some time of their lives (was it a year?) in a homosexual "stage". So Kinsey's "10%" figure is probably a more-or-less accurate statistic for the definition Kinsey was using.

So much of this comes to how one defines "gay": is it anyone who has ever had a same-sex kiss? Someone who is currently living with a same-sex partner? The first group is somewhat larger than the second group.

The other interesting aspect of the question is that whaddya know, people lie about sex: it's hard to get to accurate numbers in a society where being "out" can still get you killed.
