Don't be worried about running your first game. Crambologists are a pretty easy-going crowd. I'm sure you'll do just fine.
Here's your first guess...
Richard III said at least one of the seasons made him feel this way. (Probably all of them did, in fact, as he was notoriously cranky).

Al turns this word into something basic; otherwise it's often just an ass.

#3 Not knowing Al, I fear your clue has left me clueless. However, by chance, is the ass in question jenet?
Not: discontent, jenet

Genghis Khan had an idea of what could bring the greatest happiness. It involved the grief (See #1) of women.
Cohen the Barbarian (in The Colour of Magic) had another answer, "Hot water, good dentishtry, and soft lavatory paper."

This five-letter word meaning "regarding" or "concerning" is derived from an Old English phrase meaning "on even ground."

#7 Would the suit you are referring to be the president?
#8-this is bumpy going as it's my first time playing Crambo
#6-will need more time or another hint!
not: Not: discontent, jenet, president, anent
#6 Are you sure that it was Genghis Khan and not a mythical warrior who believed what could bring the greatest happiness involved the grief of women? I can't find the saying anywhere that is was Ghenghis, but I find it attributed to Conan. "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women."
However, I do believe you latched onto the word--lament.
Congrats to Jim for solving this crambo

Good game, Tess! I trust you won't lament joining our merry circle of Crambologists.
