I have just finished reading How I got this way by Patrick McManus, and it prompted me to think about what various nationalities find funny. I was given this book by an American with a "funniest book ever" recommendation. I found some of it mildly amusing in a pie-in-your-face sort of way but for much of the time I was irritated by the total reliance on exaggeration to make an impact (no wit and subtlety anywhere). Basically I didn't enjoy it. I think I just don't "get" American humour - or did I read the wrong book? Do others struggle to appreciate humour from writers with different backgrounds?
