Hello! I have been trying to remember a short story I read in jr high, this was probably in the late 90s to early 2000s. It was one story in a collection of YA short stories, I THINK by various authors.

In the story a young boy is working on his homework at home while his mom goes to a neighbor's house. The boy believes that different numbers are "nice" or "mean" and have different personalities. I think he states at one point the number 1 is well-meaning but dull and dim. The number 5 (maybe 6?) is an especially evil number and at a specific time (5:55 I think) the evil number is at its most powerful and the boy has to fight it or gets sucked into an alternate dimension or something.

He defeats the evil number and returns to his homework by the time his mother comes home.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thank you if you can help me out!

The story is The Homework Horror by Greg Cox.
