I am interested in reading about the Spanish Civil War, but need some good recommendations. Anyone?

The Battle for Spain by Antony Beevor is excellent. It's not a short book, but it is very readable.

Homage to Catalonia, by someone who was there.

The Spanish Civil War is given a good overview for the novice in Basque history of the world, as related to Basques and their loyalties/allegiances/motivations.

You may not have considered biographies as sources for the civil war. Here are two I can recommend. Franco: A Concise Biography by Gabrielle Ashford Hodges is a good account of that general's role in the civil war. It also provided some major surprises (to me) as to the personality of the man. Not about the civil war but offering relevant references to it is another biography: Juan Carlos: Steering Spain from Dictatorship to Democracy" by Paul Preston. Good luck in your search.
