I've been drooling over and debating each of the e-readers in my mind a lot lately... Kobo Touch because touch tech is cool... or the Sony Reader because it probably has the broadest reach into different formats... Or the Kindle because I pretty much respect Amazon, but I'm annoyed by it's lack of compatibility with Adobe Editions...

But now my problems are solved! I can have it all with the new version of the Kindle announced today. Does anyone want to dissuade me and tell me that one of the other ones really is better? But I guess this is the Kindle group, maybe I should have asked elsewhere ;)

This may be what I've been waiting for, an inexpensive, slim device for reading all those wonderful pdf's from Internet Archive! I previously had a Sony e-reader, but it just couldn't handle the pdf's properly. The Kindle Fire might just solve that problem...

79$ for an ereader? that's insane! Now I wont break the bank when I my kindle3 eventually kicks the bucket :) Ooo and the newly dubbed "kindle keyboard" is only 99$ and that's the thing I love about the kindle is the keyboard.
Also tkraft I would advise against a Kobo, their interface is clunky and its just a pain to use.

The $79 dollar version is going to have a very clunky interface too. I guess the touchscreen vs keyboard choice will be dictated by preference, and I like the keyboard, too. The Fire will be interesting to try. I do all my Kindle reading on an iPad2 and find the backlit screen fine. What I'd need to think about in replacing it with a Fire would be:

Fire - smaller screen, no camera or microphone, but flash videos and an Android OS

iPad - larger screen and camera, but no flash videos and an Apple OS (all my other devices are Windows or Android).

Luckily, my neighbor pre-ordered a Fire first-thing yesterday, so I'll be able to play with it before deciding.

I have a Kindle version 2. Does anyone know if my books can transfer over to the Kindle Fire?

> 4. Yes. Any books downloaded from Amazon are available on all your Kindle devices and all your devices which have Kindle apps, as long as they're all registered on your Amazon account. I have mine on my computers, iPad, and Droid X as well as on three Kindles scattered among family and friends.

auntmarge, about the Fire -- how important do you think a camera is? Doesn't seem important at all to me. The big thing I'm wondering about is that it connects via wifi -- don't know if that's a problem or not. My kindle's battery is really poor and there's no replacing it so I'm tempted by the Fire.

>7 AnneWK: A camera's of no particular value on an ereader other than as a convenience. I don't use it on the iPad except for an occasional Skype, which I wouldn't miss. But many people will expect it on a tablet, just as we do on phones.

The other main problem for some people is going to be wifi vs 3G connectibility. I think book downloading via 3G must be relatively cheap because of file size, which is why Ereader-only devices can offer it. On a tablet there is much heavier bandwidth consumption, what with movies and browsing, which is why there's a monthly fee with most or all tablets and cell phones using 3G or 4G. I use wifi with my iPad and have not missed the 3G from when I had a Kindle, but then I tend to read my books on my Droid when I'm out and about, and it does have 3G, in case I want to buy a book on-the-go. When I'm home I have access to my wifi network.

If you generally have wifi access and don't mind being unconnected if you're away from a network, you'll be fine.
