this book involves a group of people sent to an alternate universe or planet using a time warp type device. they become stranded when their return portal is damaged and as best i can recall they had to live there like a small colony. the only other detail that i can remember is that if they strayed outside their compound, especially into the grassy areas, there were native creatures there that would eat them.

'Tunnel In The Sky' by Robert Heinlein?
'Mankind is colonising the universe via instantaneous interstellar travel, accomplished through artificial wormhole- like "gates". Late teen hero Rod Walker is marooned with his classmates on an unknown planet when a "routine" ( but dangerous) high school survival training exercise goes dramatically wrong. The story follows their enforced transition to adulthood as they gradually band together to build a functioning society from the ground up, cut off from civilisation with no expectation of rescue.'

Second that recommendation. The native creatures were a sort of rabbit-looking thing that was extremely fierce. The teens had been warned at the beginning of the exercise to "watch out for stobor" but not told what they were, and they realized that the rabbit-monsters must be the stobor.

It's been twenty years since I read it, but as I recall, the "rabbit-monsters" were not the 'stobor' they were being warned about. I won't put a bigger spoiler in here though. :-)

The way I read it the rabbit-monsters were the stobor they were warned about on that planet.

Sort of. Yeah, any real discussion of what the stobors were is a spoiler for a nice twist...

As >7 jjmcgaffey: said, sort of.

Agreed, but yeah, it's a spoiler.
