not read many Finnish authors but have to travel to Finland for work reasons quite often (am there first and last weeks of October in Espoo & Tampere) and have read Tove Janson (the obvious one I guess) and Leena Krohn and should get round to reading some others really so look forward to reading your thread :-)

#18 I don't read that much Finnish books but in my 11 in 11 cc I had the "Finnish authors" category and enjoyed it quite a lot. Few authors that I know who have been translated into English : Sofi Oksanen, Elina Hirvonen and Johanna Sinisalo.

I have sofi oksanen's purge on my list for next year - will have a look out for the other authors too and have a read of your 11/11

Johanna Sinisalo's books sound interesting - especially birdbrain

Thanks!

I've decided to start now. I have still 8 books unread on my 11 in 11 challenge, but all the books that don't fit there will go to here.

Book #1 Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay
I bought the first season of the Dexter tv-series and was instantly hooked. The first book differs quite a lot from the show but was still very good.

#2 Dearly Devoted Dexter by Jeff Lindsay
Nothing in common with the tv-series apart from few details. Totally different crime, very gruesome.

#3 Dexter in the Dark by Jeff Lindsay
This was the weardest book from the three. A lot of writing about the Dark Passanger.

I agree, Dexter #3 was very different but I've been told book #4 gets back to business.

Book #4 White Little Car by Dan Rhodes
I really like Rhodes style. This one was another good book from him.

#5 Kuiskaus pimeässä ja muita kertomuksia by H.P. Lovecraft
My first encounter with Lovecraft. This book includes 8 stories by Lovecraft. I may read more of his stories in the future but I'm in no hurry of doing that.

#6 Nemi 6
You just have to love Nemi. One of my favourite comic characters.

#7 Aarteita ja muistoesineitä by Neil Gaiman
This book consists of 11 short stories written by Gaiman. I'd read one of them before in a graphic novel format Harlequin Valentine.

#8 Almodovar on Almodovar by Frederic Strauss
I love Almodovar's movies so I was very excited to read this book. He talks about all of his films from "Folle... folle... fólleme Tim!" to "Volver". I feel like watching some of his movies again after reading about the process how they were created.

26laura_88
dec 7, 2011, 10:49 am

I haven't read much lately because life has kept me busy. Luckily I have a few weeks holliday before going back to school so hopefully I have more reading time.

Book #9 Pistoolirapu ja muita eläinmurhaajia by Markus Bennemann
This was a fun non-fiction book about different animals who kill other animals. I liked the short "stories" about the killers and their victims. This was a book I could put down for a while and then pick up again and read a few pages.

27laura_88
dec 12, 2011, 6:39 am

Book #10 The Boy with the Cuckoo-Clock Heart by Mathias Malzieu
Very interesting story about a boy who falls in love knowing that his heart may not be strong enough to handle strong emotions.
***SPOILER ALERT***
I really hated the unhappy ending.
*** END OF SPOILER***

Book #11 Fables : Witches by Bill Willingham
I liked this one more than the previous one. The ending of this one makes me want the read the next part of the series very soon.

29mamzel
dec 16, 2011, 1:52 pm

Popping by to say hi! I loved the Dexter series, both the book and the TV show. I like how they diverged so it's like twice as much Dexter. I think I'll pass on the Cuckoo-Clock Heart. I cry at the drop of a hat and my eyes get all puffy and bleary so that I can't read.

30laura_88
dec 17, 2011, 10:41 am

#29 Hi mamzel! I'm very interested how the story in the books will continue after the third book. I just don't know how long I have to wait for the translation...

31laura_88
jan 6, 2012, 10:11 am

A few more December reads:
Book #12 by City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
The first book in the YA fantasy series. I made the mistake that while I was reading this book I read the back cover text of the second book which contained some big spoilers. Still it was a good book although sometimes I wanted more action and less relationship drama.

#13 Himokas härkäsammakko ja muita eläinkunnan seksipetoja by Markus Bennemann
This reminded me of Dr Tatiana's Sex Advice to All Creation.

#14 City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare
And now I have to wait for the third book to be translated.

I haven't read much in January because I have been spending so much time with my new boyfriend. I'm glad I started this challenge early because January seems to become a slow reading month for me.

32laura_88
jan 17, 2012, 10:21 am

Book #15 Maria & José by Erlend Loe
More like a short story than a book, but still very sweet story about a man called José who is living inside Maria's body. Kim Hiorthoy has made beautiful illustrations for this story.

#16 1001 books you must read before you die (2006) by Peter Boxall
I've been reading this book for several months in little bits at a time usually 20 pages per day. I discovered several interesting books and authors that I haven't already read from the list.

#17 Naisen talloma by Erlend Loe
In this book we follow the life of a man whose girlfriend suddenly decides to move in with him without really asking if it's ok or not. I like Loe's style of writing. He uses short chapters to describe the relationship with these two characters.

33laura_88
jan 25, 2012, 1:56 pm

Book #18 A Noble Radiance by Donna Leon
This novel is book #7 in the Guido Brunetti series. It was a quick read and an interesting story but not the best book of the series imho.

#19 Maus 1 & 2 by Art Spiegelman
I usually avoid reading books about WW2 because they make me feel so sad. This book made me cry but it was well worth it. I liked the way Spiegelman told the story of his parents by moving back and forward between present and past. This was one of the best graphic novels I've ever read.

Book #20 Earth and Ashes by Atiq Rahimi
A very short book about an old man who travels to meet his son. During the book he tries to decide how to tell his son that many of their family members have been killed in a bombing. The story takes place in Afganistan in the 1980's.

35laura_88

Book #21 Lover Enshrined by J.R. Ward
This is book #6 in the Black Dagger Brotherhood-series. This has become one of my guilty pleasure reading series. The only complaint about this book is that, for me, it felt too long. My edition was over 600 pages long. I felt that the author should have focused more to the main couple. Still a good book an a quick read despite the length.

#22 Liian lyhyt hame by Sofi Oksanen
This book contains song lyrics that Oksanen has written. The lyrics are like poems that contain stories about violence, abuse etc. For me the most interesting part of this very short book was the afterword. In the afterword Oksanen tells why she wrote the lyrics and gives facts about family violence in Finland. She also ponders why it is so hard to leave from a violent relationship. Oksanen never writes about "easy" topics. She clearly shows that more should be done in Finland to stop or at least reduce the amount of abuse.

36clfisha

@35 I do like The Black Dagger Brotherhood series, a great guilty pleasure as you say :) but I reckon most of them could do with a harsher editor. My next read Lover Avenged is over 700pgs!

38laura_88
feb 13, 2012, 6:24 am

#36 Hi clfisha! Most of the books could be around 500 pages long and the stories woudn't suffer at all imho.

#37 Thanks! :) Well I started early so that helps.

Book #23 Girl in the mirror by Cecelia Ahern
This book consist of two stories: Girl in the Mirror and The Memory Maker. I liked the first story more even though it was a bit dark. I prefer Ahern's longer works.

#24 Fables : Rose Red by Bill Willingham
Another great Fables graphic novel.

#25 What I talk about when I talk about running by Haruki Murakami
Running is not a hobby of mine but I still enjoyed this book by Murakami. He tells about his life as a writer and about his experiences in marathon and triathlon competitions. I can definitely recommed this book to fans of Murakami, runners and non-runners.

39DeltaQueen50
feb 13, 2012, 6:47 pm

Fables is another graphic series that I have on my wishlist, I don't know anything about it at all - is it reworkings of fairy tales?

40AHS-Wolfy
feb 14, 2012, 4:49 am

Fables are the reworking of the fairy tale characters as real people existing in their own community in New York. They are not the children's versions of these characters and some of the themes are very adult in nature. I'm just waiting for the 4th volume in the Deluxe editions to arrive so I can continue this series.

41laura_88
feb 14, 2012, 6:33 am

#40 I agree. With all the sex and violence this series is definitely not for children. But for adults I highly recommend this series. Some very well-known fable characters are quite different in these books compared to the original fairytales.

42DeltaQueen50

Book #26 Kaunotar ja hirviöt : sarjakuva sen oikean etsimisestä ja niiden väärien löytämisestä by Satu Lusa
A comic about a woman who tries to find the right man. Unfortunately she normally chooses the wrong men. I liked the fantasy elements in this one. One of the men she dates is a vampire and another turns in to a giant.

Book #27 Little Hands Clapping by Dan Rhodes
Another excellent book by Rhodes. This time the events of the book are connected to a very strange museum.

Book #28 Y the last man : Unmanned by Brian K. Vaughan
An ok graphic novel about the last male on earth. For some reason I didn't like the main character at all. The storyline is interesting and I'm considering reading the next part of the series soon.

You're doing great! Interesting to see what you had to say on Almodovar on Almodovar. Amazon has been trying to tell me I need to read that book. Volver is my favorite of his movies, and that odd early one he did with Chus Lampreve and the lizard named Dinero. I really like that one too. He can make some of the most offensive stuff funny.

45laura_88
mar 19, 2012, 10:09 am

#44 You definitely should read it if you're interested in Almodovar's films. Almodovar is an interesting person and the parts in which he tells about his personal life are very intriging.

I'm so behind with my update but here it comes:

Book #29 Kiroileva siili 6 by Milla Paloniemi
A very funny comic series about hedgehogs.

#30 Kirjaston henget by Jacques Bonnet
I really loved this book. Bonnet has a book collection of tens of thousands of books. He writes about bibliophiles, book organizing and the books he owns. This was a very quick read for me because the subject is close to my heart.

#31 Blankets by Craig Thompson
I saw this book mentioned on several threads here, so I decided to read it myself. My favourite parts were when the main character was with his brother and when he was with Raina.

#32 Under the skin by Michel Faber
A very bizarre story. Not what I expected when I started reading the book but still a great 1001 book.

#33 Kuollut koskettaa keveästi
Horror stories from different authors for example Dickens, Defoe, Poe, Wilde, Lawrence, King etc.

#34 Kiroileva siili 5

#35 Kuplissa by Claire Castillon
Short stories about very different people and their problems. Not my favourite of her books but still I like her style.

#36 Hunajakukka
Erotic short stories.

#37 Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick
Wanted to read this now, because I heard about the movie that was made based on this novel. I really liked the way Selznick uses pictures to move the story forward. The pictures aren't explained they just continue where the writing stops.

Some more reviews.

Book #38 The Awakening by L.J. Smith
I'm hooked to the Vampire Diaries-tv series so had to see how the books compare to it. The first book differs from the series quite alot. An ok read for me but I prefer the tv-series.

#39 Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare
A classic Shakespeare play. Read this for school.

#40 The Cloven Viscount by Italo Calvino
Part of the Our Ancestors trilogy. I have previously read the two other books. A good quirky story by Calvino.

#41 The Night Bookmobile by Audrey Niffenegger
I loved this short graphic novel. I was a bit shocked by a plot twist near the end but it didn't spoil the story for me.

#42 In the Shadow of No Towers by Art Spiegelman
I really don't know what to say about this one. Spiegelman tells about the events on 911 and after it.

#43 The City and the City by China Mieville
I have heard so much about Mieville here in LT so I had to read the first of his books that was translated to Finnish. I was quite blown away by the unusal setting and plot. Now I'm just waiting for new translations of his books.

#44 Liha tottelee kuria by Miina Supinen
I have read a short story collection by Supinen before which I liked very much. This novel was also very good. The humour in this one was a bit on the dark side but still very enjoyable.

You have intrigued me with Calvino's Our Ancestors trilogy. I haven't read Mieville's The City and the City yet but I am another fan of his works and will get around to reading it someday!

I have Our Ancestors to read, although I have already read and enjoyed Baron in the Trees. Which is your favourite out of the three?

and glad to see another Mieville fan, although I can imagine translating him must be a bit of a nightmare!

53laura_88
apr 5, 2012, 4:39 am

#52 Well all three are good books but I think Baron in the Trees was my favourite.
I think the translator did a good job with Mieville's book. So many books are translated to Finnish so the translations are usually very good.

Book #45 Tosiasioita Suomesta by Erlend Loe
In this book a Norwegian man gets a job. He has to design a brochure about Finland. The trouble is he knows very little about Finland. I usually don't like stream of consciousness technique but it worked in this one.

#46 Vadelmavenepakolainen by Miika Nousiainen
Mikko Virtanen is a Finnish man whose biggest dream is to be a Swedish man. Some parts of this book were really funny but there was a darker tone beneath it especially towards the end. I have not previously read anything by Nousiainen but after reading this I'll read more by him in the future.

#47 Miniä by Tuomas Kyrö
Kyrö is one of the most popular writer among finnish authors. This was a free book I got on "The Day of the Rose" when I bought another book from a bookstore. A quick and fun read.

I'm way behind with my reviews...
Book #48 The Gun Seller by Hugh Laurie
Hugh Laurie is one of my favourite actors but his book was a bit of let down to me. Conspiracy theories are not my thing, I guess...

#49 Mielensäpahoittaja by Tuomas Kyrö
My boyfriend recomended this book to me. It's a very funny book about a grumpy old man that thinks that everything used to be better. This has been a huge success in Finland and I can understand why.

#50 Timon of Athens by William Shakespeare
My goal is to read all of Shakespeare's plays. Not my favourite play by him but still good.

#51 Mielensäpahoittaja ja ruskea kastike by Tuomas Kyrö
The sama old grumpy man learning to cook. Excellent.

#52 Fingerpori 2 by Pentti Jarla
A Finnish comic. Very funny book.

#53 Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
I've heard so much praise about this book here in LT and now I understand why. An excellent and unique story about magic.

#54 Lover Avenged by J.R. Ward
A good book to continue the series.

#55 Knots and Crosses by Ian Rankin
The first book in the Rebus-series. A decent mystery and I will continue with this series. I liked the main character and the way the crime turned out to be quite personal to Rebus.

#56 The Sun over Breda by Arturo Pérez-Reverte
The third book in Captain Alatriste series. This was a bit different compared to the previous books. In this one Alatriste is at war with his loyal servant.

#57 Fatal Remedies by Donna Leon
Book #8 in the Brunetti series. This time Brunetti's wife is involved in a crime. Another great book by Leon.

#58 Hide and Seek by Ian Rankin
The second book in the Rebus series.

Book #59 Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
The second part of the trilogy was as captivating as the first part. I have the third part on my bookshelf so I will be reading that soon.

#57 Thanks! My reviews tend to pile up so mini-reviews is the quickest way to tackle them.

Book #60 Captain Britannia by Alan Moore
Not my favourite comic by Moore but ok.

#61 Mockinjay by Suzanne Collins
The final book of the trilogy didn't disappoint me. A great ending to the series.

#62 An Artist of the Floating World by Kazuo Ishiguro
The books setting is post WW2 Japan. An old man remembers his past as a propaganda painter during the war.

#63 Kerjäläinen ja jänis by Tuomas Kyrö
A charming and funny story about a Romanian begger and his rabbitt friend.

#64 Friends in High Places by Donna Leon
Book #9 in the Guido Brunetti series.

#65 Doppler by Erlend Loe
After a bike accident Doppler decides to move in to the forest.

#66 Choke by Chuck Palahniuk
A strange story about a man who goes to a restaurant every evening and pretends to choke to his food. He also struggles with sex addiction and has to support a senile mother.

#67 City of Glass by Cassandra Clare
Third book of the series. A lot of action in this one which was a good thing. One of the secrets of the series finally came out. Really don't know how the story will continue in the next book...

#68 Corrag by Susan Fletcher
Corrag is in jail blaimed for witchcraft and she's waiting for her dead sentence. While in prison she tells her life story to a priest.

#69 A Sea of Troubles by Donna Leon
Still continuing with the Brunetti series. I liked that Signorina Elettra had a bigger role in this book.

I've been wanting to read more of Alan Moore. Note to self, not Captain Britannia next. I'm thinking League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

#71 On Blondes by Joanna Pittman

#72 Covet by J.R. Ward
Start of a new series from Ward. I liked the main characters in this one. Can't wait for more.

#73 Lord John and the Brotherhood of the Blade by Diana Gabaldon
In this book there was more about Lord John's personal life than in the first book.

#74 Halun ja epäluulon esseet by Antti Nylen
Essays about different things from religion to an Idols contestant.

#75 Simon's Cat: In Kitten Chaos by Simon Tofield
Adorable and funny.

#76 Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett
This book is about war. Especially women at war. Pratchett never fails in being very funny no matter the subject.

#77 Lord John and the Hand of Devils
Three short stories about Lord John.

#78 Circus of the Damned by Laurell K. Hamilton
This book is book #3 in the Anita Blake series. It was an action packed read from start to finish. I think I will read the next book pretty soon.

#79 The Lunatic Cafe by Laurell K. Hamilton
#4 in the Anita Blake series. A lot of shapeshifters in this one.

Continuing with the Anita Blake-series. I've already ordered the next three in the series...

A graphic novel about the situation in the Palestinian territories in the begin of 1990's.

Good book in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

#83 Hard Eight by Janet Evanovich

#85 Love's Labour's Lost by William Shakespeare
Continuing my personal challenge to read all of Shakespeare's plays.

#86 The Absolute Sandman Volume Four by Neil Gaiman
A great ending to the series. I wish there were more Sandman comics because I have enjoyed them very much.

Pratchett never fails to entertain me. Another funny fantasy book by him.

#88 The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman
Great YA fantasy book about a orphan boy and a graveyard full of ghosts.

#89 Field of Blood by Denise Mina
First book in the Paddy Meehan series. The book kept me hooked all the way and I really liked the main character.

#90 Rape : A Love Story by Joyce Carol Oates
This was a quick read. I read the book in one sitting because I really couldn't stop. I really felt sorry for the main characters and wanted to know how they would cope after a terrible crime. Liked the ending a lot and will be reading more Oates in the future.

#91 The Free Wee Men by Terry Pratchett
A YA fantasy book by Pratchett. Especially the Wee Free Men were hilarious.

An excellent fantasy book about a man who finds a babytroll and takes it home.

I wish there were more Sandman comics because I have enjoyed them very much.

There's the Death stories (I'm going to be reading Absolute Death soon) as well as a fifth volume in the Absolute Sandman series too. Neil Gaiman has also said he will be working on a prequel which, if you haven't seen it yet, was announced at Comiccon. Details can be found here.

#95 Y : The Last Man : One Small Step by Brian K. Vaughan
Some new characters to the series are introduced in this one.

#96 Y : The Last Man : Safeword by Brian K. Vaughan
One of my favourite books in the series so far.

#97 The Diving Bell and the Butterfly by Jean-Dominique Bauby
I've seen the movie based on this book a couple of years ago but remember very little about it. This was a quick read because the book wasn't very long, a little over 100 pages. Bauby's experiences with condition called locked-in syndrome are very interesting.

My numbers aren't matching with the empty slots I have left. I'm missing one book. So irritating...

Not my favourite play by Shakespeare because I didn't like some of the main characters at all.

#103 Horns by Joe Hill
A good horror story about a man who wakes up one morning and notices a pair of horns sticking from his forehead.

Book #104 Metro 2033 by Dmitri Gluhovski
An interesting dystopian story that takes place in the metro system of Moscow. The book was a bit too long for me.
Didn't like the ending at all.

#105 The Reader by Bernhard Schlink
I saw the movie a couple of years ago. The book was as good as the movie was.

#106 Enkä ollut vanki by Hella Wuolijoki

State Secrets of Aphasia - Stepan Chapman
Grandma - Carol Emshwiller
From the Cradle - Gene Wolfe
Honeydark - Liz Williams
Familiar - China Miéville
Empire of Ice Cream - Jeffrey Ford

The weirdest for me was Chapman's story.
