I'm a student in a novel-writing class, and I need to find a book to study that's similar to the one I'm working on. I'm looking for something . . .
1. Set in a small town (or a small community)
2. Protagonist wants to leave town, but can't (money problems/family obligations)
3. Involves a stranger who might or might not help the protagonist leave
4. Set in the first half of the 20th century (not as important as the first three items)
Any suggestions (including ones that don't meet all the qualifications) would be very welcome!

Gentleman from Indiana by Booth Tarkington and also Alice Adams by the same author. Possibly Winesburg, Ohio by Sherwood Anderson and My Antonia by Willa Cather.
