Has anyone noticed that there are several Deaf characters throughout classical works from the 1800s? A popular one is Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. There are several Deaf characters in that book; the most important of which is frequently overlooked. Anyone think they know who she is?

Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins and Herman Melville also have works with Deaf characters in them. Can anyone think of other authors like this from the 19th Century?
