I have been running across Greek cookbooks lately, including one from a congregation in New York that I have serious regrets over not buying. Something's in the air! Do you have any favorites? Suggestions?

Flavors of Greece by Rosemary Barron is excellent. The lamb roasted on a spit, with its wonderful yet simple marinade, is my favorite.

I have a few suggestions:

Culinaria Greece is pretty amazing. Many, many photographs. A lot of history. Fine recipes. It looks (as all Culinaria books do) like coffee table food porn but there's actually a lot of substance to these books, even if they are an impractical size for the kitchen.

I'm wondering if the book (from the congregation in New York) is The Complete Book of Greek Cooking. It's really very good.

I love Greek Cooking For The Gods a lot. It's pretty dog-eared.

Using tags for my cook books makes this looking up books SO MUCH EASIER!!! :)

Yes, that's it. But it was an early edition - not hardbound.

I saw the Culinaria Greece in California on sale for 9.95, but I passed as it is really not the area where I collect. I think we also have the Greek Cooking for the Gods. My husband is the Grecophile, so that's why I'm less certain about what we have in this area.

Check around at Greek Orthodox parishes in your area. They usually have a book store with a cookbook put out by the ladies circle. Or if they're having a Greek festival this summer, they're sure to have books on sale at a table, too.

Diane Kochilas also has two other very good cookbooks: Glorious Foods of Greece and Meze.

I have 14 Greek cookbooks and like them all but the other two I would highly recommend are:
Olive & Caper by Susanna Hoffman, and
Food of Greece by Vilma Chantiles

Argonut (as you can see I am a bit crazy about Greece)

I have The Best Traditional Recipes of Greek Cooking and Traditional Greek Cooking which I bought as souvenirs on Crete. Both OK for checking basic recipes but nothing inspirational. Not worth of hunting, ;-)

Instead I like very much the stories and backgrounds in Kreetalainen keittokirja of Merja Tuominen-Gialitaki. Unfortunately that book is out of print.

Hey! I don't often see a mingling of Greek and Finnish so I might have to hunt down that book just for novelty's sake.

The Greek cookbook I'd been trying to remember in California is: The Art of Greek Cookery Based on the Grecian Gourmet, from The Women of St. Paul's Greek Orthodox Church Hempstead, NY. I did find it again when I was out there recently and have enjoyed it immensely

Yesterday in the bookshop I noticed that there is a new Cretan cookbook from the same author MerjaTuominen-Gialitaki, Viisaan syömisen lähteillä - kreetalaisen keittiön salaisuudet. It looked quite interesting. More than a half of it is history, traditions, raw materials, background, ways of working etc. Take a look at the publisher's web page: http://www.tammi.fi/asp/empty2.asp?P=5897&VID=default&SID=15473110319045...

At least this one may be a bit easier to acquire. ;)

Thanks for the tip! It looks like a very interesting book and if I can find it in a used bookstore next time I'm in Helsinki, I might pick it up. At 37,70 EUR, it's a bit spendy for me just now.

Thank you so much for this really comprehensive list! I LOVE Greek cookery books, and recently bought Rosemary Barron's the Flavours of Greece, and Eva Zane's book Greek Cooking for the Gods. I picked them up very inexpensively and I am delighted with them. I also like a lovely little book by Joyce Stubbs, called "The Home Book of Greek Cookery" I note that this was a preferred book of Elizabeth David, and was mentioned in several publications.
I am trying to find out about Anne Thehorous' books. According to Amazon UK, she wrote a book called Cooking the Greek Way, and another called Cooking and baking the Greek Way. I don't know whether they are UK and USA editions. I have Cooking the Greek Way, and just love it, and I was thinking about finding out more about the other title. Would be grateful for any pointers, Thanks.

I bought The Flavours of Greece a year ago, and am quite impressed with it.

Vefa's Kitchen is on my wish list. It won an award a year or two ago. It's rather pricy. I've looked at a copy in a bookstore, and it's staying on my wish list. I'm hoping to run across a copy in a used bookstore, but I may end up paying full price (or at least full Amazon.com price) for it eventually.

I have The Odyssey of Greek Cooking by Greek Ladies Philoptochos Society of Ss. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church of West Nyack, NY. I always like the ethnic recipes in the "church ladies" cookbooks, since they reflect home cooking and locally available ingredients.
