Don't miss BBC Radio 3's Night Waves program, focusing today on "Shakespeare and America"--how Shakespeare was understood Stateside.

Not to be missed. A brisk 45 minutes of discussions. It's hard to imagine that miners of early America were a well-educated lot, able to recite in unison the dropped lines of traveling Shakespearean actors.

It's a great treat to hear David Bevington speak about staging in Shakespeare's time. He has a new book out this month, This Wide and Universal Theater: Shakespeare in Performance, Then and Now. Has anyone read it yet? Please review for us.

On another matter--several times a year, BBC Radio 3 presents Shakespeare plays, beautfully produced for our auditory pleasure. Listening to the language without the comptetion of the visual brings a sharper awareness of the Bard's language. A couple of months ago, they presented King Lear.

BBC Radio 3 programs are available online and can be heard for 7 days following initial broadcast. I tell my friends, it's online, online and they say, "oh, so do we listen to it on our local radio? But we don't get bbc radio 3." Sigh. Online. Online! You can access the best of the best in radio online. While I am at it, check out bbc radio 4 if you are interested in theater. Afternoon plays, women's plays...and adult education at its best! The best things in life are free like bbc radio and the air we breathe.

Dunsinane.

A sequel to Shakespeare's Macbeth by award-winning playwright David Greig. Macbeth is dead. Under cover of night, an English army has swept through the landscape, killed the tyrant and taken the seat of power. Attempting to restore peace and put in place a new ruler, the commanding officer must struggle with a brutal guerrilla uprising and simmering discontent among his own inexperienced troops. But increasingly isolated from his own men and Scottish allies alike, his efforts to restore order appear futile as the situation spins out of control. With Jonny Phillips, Siobhan Redmond, Jack Farthing, Brian Ferguson, Ewan Stewart, Alex Mann, Daniel Rose, Joshua Jenkins, Sandy Grierson and Lisa Hogg. Original songs and music composed by Nick Powell and performed by Alex Lee, Sarah Wilson and Lisa Hogg.

The Arts & Ideas podcast from Radio 3 stated that "The Tempest," at least, would be available for download, a break with past practice. I was never able to find a legit link, though, and ended up downloading it peer-to-peer.

Tempest was available via the Shakespeare Drama podcast (where I downloaded it) and, IIRC, afterward it was also on the weekly drama podcast (until earlier today/yesterday).

Midsummer Night's Dream is available now via the Shakespeare Drama podcast.
