I bought it at newpower99.com, and it came with a little plastic gadget for forcing open the back of your Kindle, along with a tiny screwdriver. I do wish the screwdriver had been magnetized, though, because I lost one of my cover screws (no comment on that, please) while putting the cover back on. The cover screws aren't really essential, though, and the two battery screws are a little more accessible and easier to work with.

Replacing the battery voids out your warranty, but my K2's out-of-warranty at this point anyway, so I thought I'd give this a try. It's recharging the battery now, so we'll see how it works.

My two-year-old Amazon-original K2 battery wasn't holding a charge for more than an hour or so, and it would go from full to nearly empty after about five to ten minutes of on-line connection and downloading. The NewPower99 battery cost me about thirty-five dollars (with priority mail shipping), so I thought I'd give it a try rather than spend close to a couple hundred bucks on a K3, considering Amazon may be out with a much improved K4 by year's end.

One thing I had to be careful of was, when I restarted my K2 after changing the battery, I got a message on the screen that I was trying to do a factory reset. Clicking, though, rejected the factory reset and just did a simple restart (with some time required for charging on the new but power-empty battery). That's something to be careful of, that you don't accidentally do a factory reset, because then I assume you'll lose all your Collections folders as well as any non-Amazon material you've downloaded from Feedbooks and the like, plus you'll have to re-download replaceable Amazon content from your Kindle account.

I'll have to see how this new battery does, as far as giving me the kind of battery life I should expect from a Kindle.

ETA: Here's a video of how to do the replacement. It's not quite as easy as the video makes it seem, but with a little patience you can do it.

Thanks for that info, CurrerBell -- I have been worried about the battery on my K2 for a while now. it's still holding on so far but seems to lose power quickly, even when the wireless is off.

Good to hear it's so easy. I thought for some reason there would be soldering and such involved.

No. it's easy, but unfortunately it hasn't lasted. Thanks for posting, JH, because I just noticed this thread that I started. It was easy to DIY, but the machine itself finally died.

I'll have to get a K3 at some point (unless 4 comes out fairly soon). I'm using my good ole K1, which I've always kept for back-up, and it's just an absolutely superb piece of hardware, far better than what they're making now. Unfortunately, though, it doesn't have the software to go with it, especially the Collections feature.

So, again JH, thanks for posting and reviving this thread. I'm afraid the news isn't all that good after all. Easy to do, but the machine finally died altogether.

Bummer! I keep my gadgets until they rot and finally break. I hope my K3 lasts!
