Before Shonen Knife, etc., there were Takeshi Terauchi and the Bunnys (the man moves like lightning on the frets), The Golden Cups, The Mops, The Tigers, etc. Here's a good link. The author was the guitarist for an 80s garage-pop band, The Seen (see Bomp's Battle of the Garages, V.3):

More menacing totem critters than "Bunnys", I suppose.

I think I have The Spiders doing a spirited "Batman" theme.

Big Beat has a nice Spiders comp. A lot of their songs are embarassingly derivative (e.g. Mr. Tax!) but redeemed by their odd take on the source material. There is also a Japanese folk ballad (Sad Sunset) at the end I really like.

Very cool - thanks for the link. I have several of the GS comps that came out in the 80s and 90s - much of it is derivative: covers of Animals and Them songs - but wow, how original in their way!

Of this Spiders cd - It would be nice if someone would reissue it on vinyl. There have been such for The Mops and Takeshi Terauchi's Bunnys and Bluejeans.

You are probably already aware of this, but there are similar South American efforts. Los Mockers have a Big Beat comp. There are a few extraordinary cuts and the whole thing is pretty solid. Los Shakers are also pretty good. I know there are more, but, there's only so much money and time. I haven't dug (digged?) all that deep. (ly?)

Are you on Last.fm?

I keep meaning to grab some of the Latin American stuff from the Norton catalog, but have never yet heard any of it - though I have heard praise from others. I have an lp by a Peruvian band called "Tarkus" - but it's more of a proto-metal thing, and I'm not overly fond of it. I will set out after some of the ones you've mentioned.

And forgive my primitive nature - but until I set off on Google to investigate, I have no idea what Last.fm is. Thanks for the tips!

Here is a radio show (Cherry Blossom Clinic) with Empty Harem, one of the better Mockers songs. http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/7083 Cherry Blossom Clinic is always a good show.

emusic.com has a bunch (all?) of Norton stuff available. Of course, Norton on vinyl is less incongruent.

Forgive me if you don't appreciate the info. It can be obnoxious, I know.

Surely appreciated - the reason, in fact, I set up the group: selfish information gathering. Thanks!
