I love the idea of the 1010 Category Challenge and I did squeak in 100 books last year, but just. So, instead, I have opted for my own 510 challenge, which is 5 books in 10 categories, leaving me 25 to read willynilly (have to leave room for group reads and five star LT recommendations). My favorites so far are:

Shades of Gray, by Jasper Fforde and
The Widow Clicquot, by Tilar J, Mazzeo
The Art of Racing in the Rain, by Garth Stein *****
The Elegance of the Hedgehog, by Muriel Barberry
The Lonely Polygamist, by Brady Udall
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, by Aimee Bender
The Help, by Kathryn Stockett

Atmospheric Disturbances by Rivka Galchen ***

The strange tale of Dr. Leo Liebenstein, his missing wife, Rema, and his psychiatric patient Harvey. Leo's wife returns one day with a dog and Leo senses right away that she is a forgery, a simulacrum. With the help of Harvey, who believes himself to be a secret agent capable of contoling the elements, Leo journeys throughout the world in search of his real true love. But is she really missing or is Leo simply going mad? Can overanalysis actually drive you nuts? Read the following excerpt and you decide:

"I saw the blond woman's face in the mirror, and if she appeared to be looking at the same point in the mirror that I was looking at, then actually she was looking at my face in the mirror while I was looking at her face in the mirror, that our faces could be in the same places (in the mirror) depending on just where one was looking from. So she wasn't thinking of, looking at, only herself. Nor was I thinking of just myself. That's just what it seemed like if one didn't account for anticipatable perceptive distortions."

Hmmm....On the other hand. There are little gems sprinkled throughout: "His response was neither random nor spontaneous; it was predetermined by his previous ideas about me; habits of thought are death to truth; I was outside of my habits; and he -- he was wrong." I kinda like that one.

Reminiscent of Kafka's explorations, but not nearly as deftly crafted. A bizarre little book. Strangely memorable.

Well, I like the cover, but if those excerpts are at all representative of the book--no thanks! :-(

Vertigo! LOL. What was really disappointing was that my book group apparently had two different versions of what book to read which month and so only two of us read Atmospheric Disturbances and we didn't even have a discussion! Actually a shame, because it would be a great book to discuss. Lots of ambiguities to dissect and some beautiful passages to share. Anyone, anyone?

So, I gave up. The pain was winning. I am now on Hydrocodone until the surgery. One week from today. We have the urologist, the OB/GYN and the GI docs all lined up. Cancer guy on call, but not thinking we need him. Whew! Should be a veritable party in there! We decided the laparoscopic approach is out and we need to do the full open, which will be slightly safer in my case, but a much longer recovery. Sigh.

I am enjoying my re-read of the last Harry Potter. Hope to finish it soon and then switch to my Kindle for the hospital. The really big font sizes will be a bonus when I can't focus my eyes post-op!! LOL

17Donna828
okt 27, 2010, 3:21 pm

Ah, Kim, resolution at last. Your "party" doesn't sound like fun but maybe the recovery will be. Lots of pampering and all that good stuff. I've got some Hydrocodone I could send you...that's what sent me over the edge after my oral surgery. I'll be thinking of you this week as you get mentally prepared.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, by JK Rowling

A re-read just in time for the movie release. No need to review this one -- it's a great series and this is a very satisfying end. I cried, again, when some of my favorite characters died. Wow! So many details I had forgotten! Might just have to start at number one all over again...

30Berly
okt 30, 2010, 10:33 pm

Sorry I haven't been here last few days. Just trying to get all my ducks in a row. Line up car pools, get laundry done, pay bills, etc. etc. I'm in pretty good shape now. I have a few new movies on my I-pod to watch, two books on my Kindle, and an audio book in case I can't focus the eyes right away. ; ) Also, my son helped download some silly games to play. He is only ten but he told me beer pong is fun to play -- thank goodness it's not the real thing! We went to The Big Boo at his school last night. I dressed up as a Can Can Girl with a big ol' feather in my hair. Very fun. I swear he is the luckiest cake walker ever: last year he won three cakes, and this year he won two! He shared one with his friends at school, which was really nice and meant that I won't eat that much at home. Trying not to eat all the candy before the Trick or Treaters get here tomorrow night. : )

Happy Halloween!!

It sounds like your ducks are all lined up including the post-surgery media blitz. Good thinking on the audio books. I couldn't read for two days after dental surgery because of those dancing words.

So, I have loaded on my Kindle My Life So Far, Jane Fonda's Autobiography, and no surprise here, a book on Menopause, Natural Hormone Balance. My audio book is by Ellen DeGeneres, which may not be the best choice post-surgery when it hurts to laugh!

We had a very successful book drive at my daughter's school, where I am the head volunteer librarian. Two classes had 100% participation, meaning every child brought in at least one book and we had to move all the donations into an unused room because they were overtaking the floor and table tops in the library. Nice! As a reward, every child who donated a book got to attend an afterschool showing of Monster House with popcorn and candy. Very Halloween appropriate. I think 28 kids attended out of possible 42. Not bad! (Remember, her school is a small one geared to kids with identified learning disabilities like Asperger's, Dyslexia, Auditory Processing, ADHD, etc.)

Hi Darryl. Thanks for popping in. You have the MOST interesting books on your thread. They are a tad too sophisticated for post surgery brain fog, but I have a couple in mind for later. ; )

Why thank you Caroline!! My feather tended to droop a little, but my bust and butt held up, so my brief career as a Can Can girl was not a total disaster!! The DeGeneres book is The Funny Thing Is.... I have never read anything by her, but love her as a comedienne, so I have high hopes.

Janet--Thanks for all the well wishes. I am just so happy picturing you at home now. : )

So the pre-op visit went well. They only drew a little blood and left most of it for me. I check in at 9:30 Wed morning, surgery at 11:30 (West Coast time). Should last 4-5 hours. So send good thoughts any time during the day, I'll take them all!! Will probably be in the hospital 5-7 days.

I am still just trying to leave the house in good shape. Get all caught up on laundry, pay the bills, clean sheets on the beds, etc. My hubby is the best, but its tough holding down his job and mine at the same time!

Okay, back to my regular thread! Yeah. It makes me feel less like a sick person to be here. : )

I just finished Agnes Browne by Brendan O'Carroll. A quick snippet of the life of a widowed mother of seven in Dublin. She is strong-willed and loving. Bawdy and naive. It made me laugh and made me cry. Just a sweet little jewel. 4 stars.

92Berly
nov 19, 2010, 5:25 pm

Yes, she had quite the time of it. Luckily they got there early enough to be under the overhang where it was dry. They made friends with several high school students next to them who held their place in line while they ventured round the block for dinner. She went with 5 or 6 friends and they took pictures, etc. etc. I am sure it will be a "memory." Just like I remember waiting in line for Star Wars!

#91 Iread -- I can't think how I could pull off a midnight screening of a movie just now, unless my oldest was babysitting, but then any movie that was big enough to have a midnight screening would probably be one she would want to got to!

#93--Yes, Coppers, I see the evil gleam in your eye as you remember waking your son up this morning after scant few hours of sleep...I know because I was laughing secretly myself!

#94--Mark, yes, I had you pegged for a big kid!

#95--I took my oldest to the midnight showing of Twilight a couple of years ago and I have to admit, I am content to wait a few days to see a movie now.

#96--Roni!! Happy Birthday! And yes, you planned wisely and beat the weekend lines. Good job.

#97--Hi Cameling!!

62. Wolfsbane, by Patricia Briggs, four stars.

A different feel from Brigg's Mercy Thompson Series: slightly darker, more magic, set in olden times. And yet, there is the same good vs. evil plot, a strong lead woman, and star-crossed lovers. Aralorn has returned home for her father's funeral, only to discover that he is not dead, but enchanted. She must find the evil doer and discover the reason behind the magic. Is her father the true target? Or is it Aralorn or her shape-shifting wolf companion? I enjoyed this book thoroughly and now I have to go back and read the first in the series! (Obviously it was a good read even out of sequence, but if you have a choice I'd read Masques first and then this one!)

Hi Brenzi!

Richard darling-- I love the Rocky Horror Picture Show. A recent episode of Glee was a take off on it and I was trying to explain to my daughter about how we used to go the theater with newspaper, and a deck of cards, squirters and all kinds of stuff. The theater was always a mess afterwards and I think that is why they stopped showing Rocky Horro.

Linda-- Yes, I am on HRT, but only the estrogen and it is probably a lower level than I was producing beforehand. I hope my body adjusts soon! I hate this low feeling. I just want to cry all the time. Grrrr!

I have missed being in touch and am looking forward to coming up with a remedy for that.

My birthday is coming up this week. (Wednesday, Nov. 24th) It is fun to have a B'day at Thanksgiving time. I have my fingers crossed for an iPad. Thanks guys. Totally exhausted today. Was willingly dragged to the theater last night and say Harry Potter. I thought it was great!

Today, had my oldest drive my middle child (and me) to the orthodontist for an emergency fix (not for me, silly people!). Then all three kids came with me to the grocery store to restock the joint. Successful trip, but too much out and about. Tonight, I have my daughter's teacher conference, if I don't keel over. The blues have been better today--I haven't had time for them!

Tried to read The Finkler Question, but I wasn't enjoying it and I have heard good things so I decided to postpone that read until I am more up for it. Bought total trash instead: People Magazine and The Confession by John Grisham. They should work better!

123wookiebender

Today, my son and I made yam souffle, his favorite and tomorrow morning the girls and I are making the mushroom rollups. In the afternoon we head over to a friend's house. Hi one and all. I have been reading your nice comments, but haven't felt up to posting myself. Still fighting complications from surgery and really wiped out. I have read two light books, which I will review in more detail at some point, I hope! The Confession, by Grisham and Indulgence in Death by JD Robb. I enjoyed them both. Grisham's was thought-provoking and darker than I remember his other works. (Death penalty issue.) Robbs was a continuation of a series and I missed the earlier ones. Not a problem for reading the book, but I wasn't quite sure when the book was set. Lots of technology incorporated into daily society: droids and wrists links, etc.

Here is some wordplay my Dad sent me. Good for a laugh or two:

1. Those who jump off a bridge in Paris are in Seine.

2. A man's home is his castle, in a manor of speaking.

3. Dijon vu - the same mustard as before.

4. Practice safe eating - always use condiments.

14. Q. What's the definition of a will? A. It's a dead give away.

15. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

Yes, I have been reading. No, I will not be reviewing them, but at some point hope to put together the list with simple ratings. I will do that before I start a new 2011 thread. : )

All right, just getting all my ducks (or books) in a row, as it were. Here are the latest reads in no particular order:

Hunting Ground, by Patricia Briggs - Favorite new author of the year. Have to like supernatural stuff to enjoy her.
From Fatigued to Fantastic, by Jacob Teitelbaum. As we all know, a rough year for me physically. This is a great resource!
The Twelve by William Gladstone. The end of the world and second coming of Christ. Great premise, bad book. Do NOT read it!
The Knight, by Steven James. Didn't even finish it. Gross, graphic details. It got really high marks on LT reviewers, but too much for me.
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, by William Kamkwamba. High marks for this one! The writing is a little too simplistic for my taste, but nonetheless, a great read about a boy in Africa who is fascinated by electricity and builds a windmill to power his house and village. By the way, he only had a science book for reference because his parents could not afford to send him to school!
The Confession, by John Grisham. I really enjoyed this one! Despite the grim subject matter of wrongful conviction and the moral exploration of the death penalty, this was a real page turner.
Agnes Brown, by Brendan O'Carroll. A sweet story of a single mom of seven kids in Ireland, who just will not let life get her down.
The Postcard Killers by James Patterson and Liza Marklund. Hmmmm...not the thriller I thought it would be. Not bad. Just okay.

Phew!! That catches me up and now I can start 2011 with a clean slate. I only read 72 books this year, but given that I lost a month to pain meds and didn't read for most of November, I am going to call it good and think it is close enough to 75 to be a success!!

Can't wait to hang out with you all next year. : )

Not to worry, Kim! Deborah and I are going to come down together some time and we'll give you plenty of warning so that we can all meet up. Here's a LINK to my 2011 thread in Club Read if you want to keep chatting. Happy New Year!

I had my phone turned off since we were at a concert. Pink Martini. Very fun, eclectic. Portland based, but they perform internationally. Big band sound and they added a bell choir, a boy's choir and a chamber choir tonight. Now I am at home with the youngest two. Almost time to get out the champagne (Martinelli's Sparkling Cider (or kid wine, as we call it)) and popcorn and watch the ball drop. Talk to you in January! LOL

Pink Martini? I will have to see if I can find clips on YouTube.

Hey, don't mock that kid wine! I like it too :)

They have a new Christmas Album out this year and played several of their songs tonight. One was in Hebrew, another in German, I think there was a Dutch one, and a Turkish one, too. Like I said, eclectic!! I have been a fan since before they were BIG.

Ha! I just realized I never enterred two ebooks I read. Indulgence in Death and The Other Side, the first by J.D. Robb and the second a collection of short stories including one by Robb. The short story was a continuation of the characters in Indulgence, which was kinda fun. That brings me to 74 books. Yeah Me!!
