EUROCLIO - European Association of History Educators
About My Library
Over the past years, EUROCLIO has acquired a vast library on History Education. To make this collection available for students and researchers we are working together with the University Library and the Center for Historical Culture of the Erasmus Universiteit in Rotterdam. A large part of our collection will eventually move to Rotterdam, but we are now working to catalog all the books in the EUROCLIO library and in the private library of Joke van der Leeuw-Roord, EUROCLIO Executive Director, via this website. As soon as all books have been entered, the collection will be embedded on our own website. Via the tools on librarything.com we will be able to provide suggested reading lists easily for all our projects.
About Me
Since its foundation EUROCLIO has placed balanced history at the centre of education of responsible national and global citizens, of fostering international understanding, respect and cooperation. The overall aim of EUROCLIO is to promote and support the development of history education so that it strengthens peace, stability, democracy and critical thinking. EUROCLIO strives to shift the history and civics education in Europe towards inclusion of multiple perspectives, innovation, critical thinking, and connecting across boundaries of countries, ethnicities and religions. Recognizing that history is a powerful mobilizing force in societies, EUROCLIO promotes the sound use of history education towards building and deepening of democratic societies.
EUROCLIO does not only focus on diminishing tensions between countries but it also tries to bring together different communities within countries by exploring the sometimes painful past through a safe environment and through a closely guided and monitored process.

EUROCLIO affirms that the past does not stop at borders and that history education has a great impact on how people look at the world around them. In the view of EUROCLIO there is a special responsibility for the teaching and learning of history, as history is the most politicised branch in education. School History therefore demands responsible all-rounded professionals and therefore EUROCLIO has been bringing together historians and history educators from Europe together to discuss and practice an all-inclusive study of the past.

EUROCLIO views history as the most structured channel for developing historical awareness of societies, thus contributing to their advancement in a constructive manner. It propagates an approach to history education that reinforces democratic values, competences and dispositions. The subject enhances mutual respect, tolerance and anti-extremist education. It poses questions that initiate debate.

In order to achieve this mission, the work has been centred around three main pillars of activities:

Professionalism and Knowledge Exchange, which includes training, the development of educational material and research on issues related to history and history education.
Networking and Dissemination of Information, which includes sustaining an international network of at least 40.000 historians and history educators, maintaining a website, and editing and circulating Newsletters and a Magazine on the Learning and Teaching of History.
Support for Sustainable and Participatory Governance and Operation, which means stimulating, initiating and strengthening of History Teachers’ Associations, and empowering them by developing their capacities and facilities.

The organizations strength and success are based on the unique combination of academic research, in-the-field experience, and wide network of highly trained professionals across Europe.
