- About My Library
What kind of books do I like?
My taste in books has changed a lot over the years. When I started really reading a lot (as a young teenager) I loved fantasy. My dad gave me some books of his to read, even though he liked SF better. In my late teens/early twenties I read a lot of historical fiction (early medieval/medieval period) and historical adventures (Da Vinci Code and anything like it). Slowly I gravitated back to fantasy, and discovered science fiction.
Science fiction is my main passion now. I collect it, analyse it, read it, love it. I try to read outside of my own bubble, from fantasy and horror, to main stream literature.
I used to read almost exclusively books I own, and almost never borrow. I am always "a bit" behind in reading of my shelves, although recently I have been trying to at least read what I have last bought first, before buying more. My collection is mainly science fiction. When collecting I nearly always buy second hand, in English. I don't mind the edition or form (hardcover/paperback) that much, but do have a soft spot for old books and pretty editions.
Anything I read before I started keeping lists of dates read I give the read dates of 2003-01-01/2003-01-02, even if the book is published after that time. I just have no clue when I read them. I need to work on tagging. I'll at least keep genre tags (my own genres :D) and am working on subject tags, at least for time, location and historical personalities.- About Me
- I studied Cultural Heritage and love to read. I work as a software tester. I'm a fan of Bette Midler (that explains my four copies of A view from a broad). I love history, especially the middle ages (preferably early middle ages). I also game, crochet, knit, cross stitch, diamond paint, and sew.
In my spare time I channel my LT grievances into my own digital book catalogue, written in MySQL and PHP (Laravel). For me these grievances are:
- import/export/backup
- registration of stories/novelettes/novella's/poems in magazines, anthologies and collections
- registration of magazines/magazine issues
- stats about my collection and reading behavior
- clean data about works/editions and "authors"
- registration of lists/awards
- link/dataloading from known trusted sources (ISFDB + WWE)
It's also a great side-project for me to learn more about database design, PHP development, MVC frameworks, servers, automated tests, code quality, repositories, scripts, scraping, connecting databases, data quality, mobile development etc. The code/design isn't (and won't be) available online, but I am always happy to talk to people about it. - Sted
