About My Library
University Club Library Collection Development Policy

The University Club Library is a place for quiet study and relaxation, and a sanctuary from the rigors of scholarship and other work pressures. The Library maintains a small collection of popular and recreational reading for its member’s enjoyment. The Collection consists primarily of recent (within the last 3-5 years) contemporary fiction, non-fiction, a small reference collection, and some classic works. Selection decisions are made by members of the University Club’s Library Committee utilizing resources such as Publishers Weekly, the New York Times Review of Books, and other respected sources. Book suggestions from the members are welcome.

The Commons Collection seeks to select quality, well-reviewed titles that we expect to be of interest to our members. Textbooks, beach books, romantic novels, juvenile or children’s literature are generally not collected. All materials should be hardbound or trade paper works. The Commons Collection also includes subscriptions to several daily newspapers, and several popular magazines of which the most recent three issues are retained (older issues are weeded and donated to Family House for their use.)

Gift donation and free materials are treated in the same manner as other potential acquisitions. That is, they are accepted, retained, circulated, located and discarded in accordance with collection development policies of general application. The Library retains the right to dispose of gifts at any time and in any manner deemed appropriate. Conditional gifts are not favored and may be refused. Cash donors may request that their donated funds to be used to purchase materials in a certain subject. The Library reserves the right to select titles, formats, editions, etc. with donated funds unless otherwise directed during the donor’s initial contact with the Library regarding the gift. Those requests will generally be honored as much as possible and acknowledged in a book plate commemorating the donor. The library will provide a receipt upon request in acknowledgment of the gift but will not provide any valuation of the gift for tax or other purposes.
