- About Me
- Gate City Gatehouse is a project to organize and establish a bookstore/study center in North Carolina's Piedmont Triad (Greensboro/Winston-Salem/High Point) which celebrates scholarship and practice from the Christian world and life view.
The name "Gate City Gatehouse" represents the place (the Piedmont Triad) and the vision (a stronghold).
Greensboro is nicknamed the "Gate City" because historically it was the major transportation hub for the state.
A gatehouse is an entry-way structure, an enclosure leading into or out of a major building or area, like a walled city, a castle or a courtyard.
Christianity has long employed images of the mansion, the city and the kingdom to express the biblical vision of community. Ancient literature tells us of cities where the gate was the place the community's elders gathered and where people went for counsel, to engage in transactions with credible witnesses, and even to seek justice. In the Gospel of Matthew we have a record of Christ calling himself "The Narrow Gate".
Christianity has a long history of scholarship. Christians have actively and publicly engaged the persistent, universal questions of humanity and contributed to a robust humanitarianism. Christians have sought an integration of heart, mind and body, the mutual goals of right thinking (orthodoxy) and right acting (orthopraxy). Christians have a history of serving humankind by fostering excellence and seeking Shalom, or flourishing. The institution of higher learning, the University, was one product of this activity. The Piedmont Triad is home to several institutions of higher learning. Sadly, on many of these campuses Christianity is often ignored. In addition, typically the local church is not a place where the application of faith to one's particular work is discussed. Finally, it is never to early to start thinking deeply about the purpose of one's existence and what one will do with one's life. These are questions even younger learners can explore.
A study center is a non-profit, educational organization which seeks to engage in and stimulate scholarship and thoughtful consideration of the implications of one's worldview. A Christian Study Center is a multi-denominational study center in which the scholarship is oriented around Christ and the biblical worldview.
Currently a virtual community, the goal is to formerly organize, become a member of the Consortium of Christian Study Centers, have a physical location hosting resources (library/bookstore/study space) and programs (lectures, discussions, exhibitions, performances, etc.). - Sted
