Om migI write. Read, too, although I also really like to look at pictures. Thrilling LibraryThing moment? Finding that someone other than I owned to having a copy of my book, Reconstructing the Subject.

Every month I write a column about the city I live in (Victoria BC) for FOCUS Magazine, and to gather material for same, I spend my time theorizing Victoria's urban spaces and economy. My blog lately serves as a placeholder for research and as an incubator for other writing that I hope to bring forward eventually. Despite my anxieties around public speaking, I recently found myself doing a bit more of that to groups around town, too. Boy, was I surprised...

Om mit bibliotekIt's a real mixed bag -- it contains my books, as well as my husband's, my son's, and my daughter's. Its contents are books that belong to us, although I'm vaguely tempted to use LibraryThing as a reading journal, to keep track of read books from other libraries. But then again, I'm too lazy to do that, so... all the books are those we actually can locate here (if only we hadn't spread them out in different rooms and shelves, and mixed them up illogically).

Many books still to come, some of the embarrassing drivel variety, ...although: think of the jumble sale possibilities! My shelter magazine slut phase (which in books translated to coffee table decorating books), coupled with a desire for therapy of the handicraft and gardening kind, resulted in many additions of glossy paper heavyweights, whose fluffy content is nonetheless nice to look at. My design books are another matter. Design is god.

Frankfurt School passions and academic marxism (art school and grad school varietals) provide a stock of heavy theory, some of which is now of much less use than it was when, as a grad student, I wrote for an audience of 3 or 4. I write magazine articles about *place* now, which require a different dialect, as the audience is much larger. Hence the design gods, which I propitiate and beseech for comfort.

The fiction in this library mostly isn't mine, but springs from the other family members (although I will own to some). I have long rows of linear feet of books still to catalog -- given that I joined in Jan.06 (two years ago!), I might get done in 2010. I recently started using a CueCat to zip my books in (provided they're ones with an ISBN barcode), which facilitates catalog entry, but doesn't cure me of inherent laziness around assigning tags. Those will have to come later.

There are some strange quirks to LibraryThing cataloging: depending on how you enter a book, you might have a unique work, or you may find that you share that book with 42 other users. Hence, I'm disinclined to believe LT when it tells me that anything about my motley collection of books is unique. But of course it's flattering all the same.
