sturlington: Inspired by Pride and Prejudice.
elkiedee: A kind of irreverent commercial fiction take on the Pride and Prejudice story. Good fun. Bridget Jones really kicked off a whole load of comic chicklit novels with a take on Jane Austen characters.

aulsmith: I didn't think this went very well with Jane Eyre.
elkiedee: Wide Sargasso Sea is the story of Antoinette, known as Bertha, the Madwoman in the Attic of Jane Eyre. It's a very different perspective on the and story, and offers a bit of a challenge to the idea of Mr Rochester as a romantic hero. I'm not really a fan of Jane Eyre, apart from the early chapters which fascinated ms a child, and love WSS. I suspect that people who love JE and find it romantic will feel aggrieved by the challenge of WSS.
Dilara86: Inspired by Jane Eyre
Her_Royal_Orangeness: companion to Jane Eyre; tells the story of Bertha and how she met Rochester; very different from Jane Eyre in style and theme

aulsmith: More heavy-handed than Austen.
sturlington: Inspired by Emma. Satire of rural romantic fiction popular at the time.
elkiedee: I think it's not really inspired by or a response to Emma. Mary Webb was a popular author at the time and some of her work has been repented by Virago, and I understand that this was a parody of more contemporary novels than of Jane Austen.
