Even though I might never achieve my strange aspiration to be a Slow Fat Triathlete, I really enjoyed what I read of this book. Jayne Williams is a very personable, engaging writer. It's clear that when she started she had no idea what she was doing - but (as far as I know) she went about everything the right way. She investigated different gear brands, she consulted her physician, she found a training group that was supportive of her as a newbie. She started with a Sprint Triathlon (much shorter than the Olympic length one) and worked her way up.
She has lots of suggestions and advice and personal anecdotes, but never sounds preachy or like a know-it-all. She acknowledges her limitations and works with them/around them. She describes the Triathlon culture and what it's like to be the new kid, what happens at a race, what to look out for in terms of injuries, and what to expect when you've gotten addicted to triathlon!
Overall, I'd say it's an excellent book for someone who is interested in getting started but is wary of jumping in to a new sport - especially if one happens to be a Slow and/or Fat Triathlete. Big ol' thumbs up.… (mere)
