This is an essay by Ben Wicks encouraging parents to promote reading in their children. (63 sparsely worded pages) It is a solid, enthusiastic essay - a good read, for parents. .It is amusingly illustrated by Wick's himself. But I cannot help noticing that it is like the proverbial 'elephant that labored to produce a mouse'. The well-established cartoonist Wicks involved funding from 13 major companies, refers to 5 major literary institutions, and got Canada Post to distribute the essay. He suggests that the parents of 10,000 kids got a copy. Did this promote reading or Ben Wicks?… (mere)

A depiction of conditions that Wicks' mother experienced in London during the Blitz of WWII told through articles and anecdotes. Not as memorable as No time to wave goodbye but nevertheless a good portrayal of political and personal circumstances of the time.

I thought (from the title, the dust jacket, and the first chapter) that this book would be a biography or memoir about Ben Wicks's mother Nell. However, it turned out to be a history of aerial warfare during the Second World War strung together with anecdotes from a lot of different people from different parts of England, not even neighbours of Nell's. This wasn't the book I wanted to read. It lacked the personal immediacy and continuity I had hoped for.

A collection of wartime memories by individuals solicited by Ben Wicks.
My contribution is included as the Final Chapter in this book.
