The True Account of the Death by Violence of… af Stan Washburn
A clever, rather cynical revision of the George and the Dragon story, done in elaborate pictures in a style suggested by 18th century cartoons like Rowlandson or Hogarth. In this version the dragon saves he kingdom from a plague of manticores; the king decides to cut the army, and George is hired by the disgruntled soldiers to kill the dragon; he does, and is executed for it. The king wants to have the dragon canonized as a saint but the bribes are too high, so it is suggested he have George canonized instead, with revisions of the story to create the traditional version (it helps that the dragon liked to drink a sort of rum punch called a "maiden")… (mere)
I hadn't read anything by this author before, but I'm always up for new mysteries. It was pretty good. Not so good that I plan to add any of his other books to my already too-long list, but good enough that if another of his books were to cross my path, I'd read it. The only thing that really bothered me were the unnecessary "teen angst" scenes. I got a little tired of Essie's friends complaining about how awful their parents were. And for a while I forgot just how young Essie really was.
