Page Turners Book Discussion: The Color Purple by Alice Walker For this round of Page Turners we will be focusing on the social novel. The social novel often takes a societal problem, such as poverty or racism, and examines it in great detail through a character or cast of characters. Some of the novels we will read have greatly impacted history and have even lead to legal action. Our third novel will be Alice Walker's National Book Award winning and controversial novel, The Color Purple. The novel examines the effects of racism and misogyny directed at black women in the rural South during the early twentieth century.
