For this round of Page Turners we will be focusing on the social novel. The social novel often takes a societal problem, such as poverty or racism, and examines it in great detail through a character or cast of characters. Some of the novels we will read have greatly impacted history and have even lead to legal action.

Our third novel will be Alice Walker's National Book Award winning and controversial novel, The Color Purple. The novel examines the effects of racism and misogyny directed at black women in the rural South during the early twentieth century.

The World Will Follow Joy is Walker's new collection of poetry. These poems urge us to look beyond our own learned fears, cynicism, and biases and heal the wounds that persist. Alice Walker is known for her literary fiction, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Color Purple, her many volumes of poetry, and her powerful nonfiction collections. Her advocacy for the dispossessed has spanned the globe. She lives in Northern California.

The Cushion in the Road: Meditation and Wandering as the Whole World Awakens to Being in Harm's Way Alice Walker Alice Walker’s esteemed literary career spans over four decades and includes seven novels, four collections of short stories, four children’s books, and volumes of essays and poetry. Her 1983 novel The Color Purple received the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, and was adapted for Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film and the Broadway stage. Her many honors include a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lennon/Ono Peace Grant, and a residency at Yaddo. In 2006, she was an inaugural inductee into the California Hall of Fame, and in 2007 her archives were opened at Emory University. Meeting on the first Monday of each month, this open book group seeks to deepen the dialogue between different understandings of, and commitments to, living a life in which faiths and feminisms intersect and inform our work for justice and wholeness.
