Kort biografi
an Gardiner Waddell (born 1942) is a Canadian politician.

He was first elected to the Canadian House of Commons in the 1979 general election, representing the riding of Vancouver Kingsway, and later the riding of Port Moody—Coquitlam. He was a candidate to succeed Ed Broadbent as leader of the New Democratic Party in 1989. He finished fifth at the leadership convention. He lost his seat in the 1993 federal election.

Waddell then moved to provincial politics, serving in several positions in the British Columbia NDP governments of the 1990s, including minister of small business and then minister of tourism under Glen Clark, and minister of the environment under Ujjal Dosanjh.

He attempted to return to the House of Commons as an NDP candidate in both the 2004 federal election and 2006 federal election in the riding of Vancouver Kingsway, but was defeated both times by Liberal candidate David Emerson.

Waddell is also an author. In 2002, he released the political mystery A Thirst to Die For.

This book by Ian Waddell, former NDP MP from British Columbia, is quite the thriller. Clayton Greene, the NDP MP for Vancouver Centre (remind you of anyone?), discovers that a Conservative Senator, Senator Murphy, is behind a deal to ship Canadian water to the US. His researcher, Janet Wong, makes arrangements through her uncle for Clay to talk to the ship's captain but when they arrive at the ship he has just been murdered. A parliamentary reporter (female) was also along. Soon, Clay and the reporter are being followed, threatened and murder is attempted. The Senator and his cronies (which includes the VP of the United States) do not take kindly to being investigated. The big question is whether the Prime Minister, Sandy MacKenzie, knows about this and is receiving money for the deal.

How can you get more Canadian than this? There are lots of scenes in Ottawa but also ones in BC, Alberta and Quebec to give a flavour of the country. Many of the scenes in Ottawa take place in Parliament and along the way the reader learns fascinating bits of information about the Canadian parliamentary system.
