PDFR31 | This policy focuses on ICPSR's mission in providing access to data for social and behavioral science research and instruction. The policy describes ICPSR's mandate in this area, the objectives and scope of the endeavor, the guiding principles, and related risks and challenges. The appendices provide additional information on access rules, roles and responsibilities, and related links | The notion of access to data and what access means has changed as ICPSR has evolved and grown. When the organization was established in 1962 with the express goal of sharing and providing access to quantitative social science data, most ICPSR data users were Consortium members. Over the decades, the user community has expanded as external sponsors have capitalized on the infrastructure of ICPSR to provide free public access to their data through topically-themed archives. The openICPSR service also provides open access to data |

CDSCH2 | 1 File - 3rd Movement Chester | William Billings (1746–1800) is a major figure in the history of American music. His works capture the spirit of sinewy ruggedness, deep religiosity, and patriotic fervor that we associate with the Revolutionary period in American history. I am not alone among American composers who feel a sense of identity with Billings, which accounts for my use of his music as a departure point. These three pieces are not a "fantasy" nor "variations" on themes of Billings, but rather a fusion of styles and musical language. | 1st Movement "Be Glad then, America", is built on these lines from Billings' text:

Yea, the Lord will answer
And say unto his people — behold
I will send you corn and wine and oil
And ye shall be satisfied therewith.

Be glad then, America,
Shout and rejoice.
Fear not O land,
Be glad and rejoice. Halleluyah! | 2nd Movement "When Jesus Wept", begins with a solo by a bassoon and soon the bassoon is accompanied by an oboe. "When Jesus Wept" is round and uses Billings' music in its original form. .

When Jesus wept, the falling tear
in mercy flowed beyond all bound;
when Jesus mourned, a trembling fear
seized all the guilty world around. | 3rd Movement is "Chester"; originally a church hymn, and adopted by the Continental Army as a marching song.

Let tyrants shake their iron rod,
And slavery clank her galling chains,
We fear them not, we trust in God,
New England's God forever reigns.
The foe comes on with haughty stride,
Our troops advance with martial noise,
Their vet'rans flee before our youth,
And gen'rals yield to beardless boys. | It is an arrangement by the composer for concert band--the "Chester" movement was revised and lengthened.

This is another link to 1940s Martha Graham who is linked to Halston and all of the American Art push of that came in the 1960s & 1970s that led up to Madonna as Madam X.

CDREY | This is a collection of information from the internet and uncited: The First Suite convinced many other prominent composers that serious music could be written specifically for the band repretoire. | The First Suite has three movements, each with its own character and form. It is not apparent from the score, but Holst let it be known that the three movements should follow each other without a break. The complete composition is based upon an eight-bar melody reminiscent of English folk song; however, the tune is original to Holst. | What is the form of Irish tune from County Derry?
Irish Tune from County Derry (published 1918) is based on earlier settings that date back as early as October 1902 with an essentially identical setting of this melody for a wordless mixed chorus. Later versions for solo piano (1911) and string orchestra with two optional horns (1912) followed. | Most people know Irish Tune from County Derry as “Danny Boy” (or even “Londonderry Air”). | F Major | Lincolnshire Posy was commissioned by the American Bandmasters Association and premiered at their convention with the composer conducting. It is in six movements, all based on folk songs from Lincolnshire, England. Grainger's settings are not only true to the verse structure of the folk songs, but attempt to depict the singers from whom Grainger collected the songs. Since its premiere, it has been recognized as a cornerstone of the wind band repertoire. | Lincolnshire Posy, as a whole work, was conceived and scored by me direct for wind band early in 1937. Five, out of the six, movements of which it is made up existed in no other finished form, though most of these movements (as is the case with almost all my compositions and settings, for whatever medium) were indebted, more or less, to unfinished sketches for a variety of mediums covering many years (in this case, the sketches date from 1905 to 1937). These indebtednesses are stated in the score. This bunch of "musical wildflowers" (hence the title) is based on folksongs collected in Lincolnshire, England (one notated by Miss Lucy E. Broadwood; the other five noted by me, mainly in the years 1905-1906, and with the help of the phonograph), and the work is dedicated to the old folksingers who sang so sweetly to me. Indeed, each number is intended to be a kind of musical portrait of the singer who sang its underlying melody - a musical portrait of the singer's personality no less than of his habits of song - his regular or irregular wonts of rhythm, his preference for gaunt or ornately arabesqued delivery, his contrasts of legato and staccato, his tendency towards breadth or delicacy of tone. Suite; Lincolnshire is home to the original Magna Carta; which remain from when it was sealed by King John on 15th June 1215. Lincoln is also the only place in the world that has a copy of the 1217 Charter of the Forest as well. The Lost Lady Found is a ballad that was first written in the early 1800's, but its origins could be much older. The text tells the story of a maid who was kidnapped by Irish raiders and taken to Dublin, whose uncle is accused of her murder, and later is rescued by her childhood admirer. The work was debuted with only three of its six movements by the Milwaukee Symphonic Band, a group composed of members from several bands including the Blatz Brewery and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer factory worker bands. Bb Major | Rosa Parks Boulevard pays tribute to the woman who, in 1955, helped set in motion the modern civil rights movement by her refusal to move to the back of the bus in Montgomery, Alabama. This dramatic work features three trombones, which represent the spirit of the African American preacher and the courage of Rosa Parks. Duration - ca. 11:30 | d minor | 80 BPM |
Bassett is quoted in the liner notes as believing that the Lullaby “...may possibly be the only lullaby ever specifically written for, and commissioned by, a band." | Lullaby ( for Kirsten) was premiered by the University of Michigan Symphony Band under the direction of H. Robert Reynolds on October 4th 1985. The piece was composed in celebration of the birth of Reynold’s second daughter, Kirsten. It was the student members of the University of Michigan Band who sponsored the commission -- an outstanding gesture and testament to the impact H. Robert Reynolds had upon his students. | Four Note Motif with Expansion & Contraction | Modern Genre | Bassett is the University of Michigan’s Albert A. Stanley Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Music, who won the 1984 Henry RusselLecturer award, the University’s highest faculty honor. He has received the Distinguished Artist Award from the State of Michigan, was named Distinguished Alumnus by his California alma mater, Fresno State, and by the University of Michigan School of Music. He was awarded the Major
Composer Award and membership of the American Academy of Arts and
Letters, and has twice been composer-in-residence at the Rockefeller
Foundation’s Bellagio Center. Bassett received the 1966 Pulitzer Prize in
Music for his Variations for Orchestra, premiered in Rome in 1963 by the RAI Symphony Orchestra under Feruccio Scaglia, followed two years later by the Philadelphia Orchestra’s U.S. premiere under Eugene Ormandy. | Uses Tonal Ambiguity | Symphony in B flat, is the earliest example of an extended symphonic work for concert band. It is recognized as one of the greatest masterpieces in the concert band repertoire as well as the catalyst and inspiration for many iconic works written in the second half of the twentieth century for concert band by other esteemed composers, many of whom had previously been reluctant at best to consider the ensemble as a serious performance medium. Hindemith conducted the premiere on April 5th, 1951 in Washington, D.C. and gifted the original manuscript score to the band’s director inscribed with the following message: “To Captain Hugh B. Curry after a very pleasant time with the Band and many thanks.” | Sonata Form | 3/2 & 2/2 |, 5/4 with truncation | Exposition, Development, Recapitulation & Coda | A then B then A+B | g minor (remember it has b flat in it | Introduction then A then B then A+B then A+B+ Theme 1 then Coda | KEYS: Movement 1 Eb Major; Movement 2 Eb Major to E; Movement 3 F Major | Movement 4 E to Eb | Movement 5 Eb Major are the tonal centers. The E to Eb is interesting.. | Modulation is used a lot | Eb Major to Bb Major to E Major | Straus Fanfare is in Eb Major and dedicated to the Wiener Philharmoniker; The Fanfare für die Wiener Philharmoniker was written in 1924 for the organization's first benefit ball, which raised money for the musician's pension fund. Held on March 4 of that year, the ball took place during the holiday called Fasching in German-speaking countries and known as Carnival or Mardi Gras in other countries. The piece was played while honored guests, such as the Matron of the Ball, arrived at the event. The work has been played every year since at the Philharmonic's annual balls. |
