A collection of 52 obituaries written for The New York Times by Robert McG. Thomas, this book grew on me. It only takes the reading of a few of these for the reader to understand the form and its limits, and to appreciate the art with which McG. sketches an appropriately honest yet forgiving portrait of the deceased in a few lines, and the skill with which he locates the telling detail or anecdote on which to peg the obituary.

I was morbidly curious when I saw this book. 52 of the best obituaries written by McG. It was alright.
