Let me just it now- this was solid FUN to read. I can honestly say I've never read a Young Adult book where the primary setting is a comic convention, so that made this book such a blast to read! I feel like comic con settings are so very ripe with opportunity for characters and conflict and plot, and that really came through in "Geeks Guide".

This is a relatively short read (about 250 pages) and I flew through it in a day, but enjoyed every moment. Yes, it was kind of cheesy (it's a boy-pursues-girl read) but I thought the relationship felt genuine and progressed in a way I could believe.

Also, I TOTALLY loved the female characters in this book. They each had strong interests, personalities, and voices, and it was very enjoyable reading them.
Again, I personally just had a lot of fun reading this. The writing is solid, nothing spectacular, but the plot and characters truly pulled me in to the story!

Tash has once again penned a lovely story, with characters who jump off the page and make the reader absolutely invested in their lives and stories. A wonderfully written exploration of a young woman navigating cultural expectations and her own dreams for the future, this one is a must read for any teen (or the parent of any teen) with acting ambitions.

Okay, I need a cool-down period to get my thoughts into a more or less proper order to write a coherent review.

A definite 3.5-er because: a) on one hand - I've read it in a single day but b) now I'm not entirely sure WHAT it was that I got dragged through.
This is a little confusing.

My expectations ran too high, apparently.
Anyway.
Later.

Right.
I loved Cora. Such a spirited ambitious girl! I kind of envy her for knowing exactly what she wants.
Michael was... always running away from things. Mostly from making decisions.

I have issues with insta-love, and starting new relationships without breaking off with the current significant other. Highly emotional situations not withstanding.

This read like a summer fling. And Cora is way more realistic than Michael. And with promises coming from the one least likely to uphold them? I'm not exactly holding out for them to last.

Overall, this was a fast read. And while I don't regret picking it up, it's entirely forgettable.

FINAL VERDICT: try it

This was an interesting read, not so much for the love triangle aspects but more for the commentary on how technology and computer learning impact us as social animals. I was initially upset with the heroine because she straight-up lies to her ex-boyfriend, taking on a different name, omitting personal details, and refusing to show her real face in the virtual reality sim. But that plot is resolved pretty quickly when she tells Caleb the truth and they reconcile. I wasn't sold on the ending (how to not give spoilers, eek) in part because it was pretty rushed. Again, I felt the romance was overshadowed by the rather sinister artificial intelligence entities and that was fine, but it was more dystopian than I expected, given the cute cover.

Not for me, but I bet others would really enjoy it.
