Haldun Taner is perhaps contemporary Turkish literature's most popular and outstanding playwright, also intimately involved in all aspects of the theater. The son of a lawyer and professor, Taner was born in Istanbul. After receiving his secondary education at the famous Galataysaray Lycee, he vis mere pursued advanced study and degrees in Heidelberg and Vienna. Among his many endeavors, he has taught drama at Istanbul University and worked as a journalist for the newspapers Milliyet and Tercumen. In all, Taner published 7 short story collections, 10 plays, and 6 cabaret pieces. One of his most famous plays is Kesanli Ali Destani (The Ballad of Ali of Keshan), which appeared in 1964. A political satire that includes incidental music, Talat Halman refers to it as "Brechtian epic theater" (Modern Turkish Drama). Taner's realistic short stories, however, are his primary achievement, and many regard him as Turkey's finest writer in this form. (Bowker Author Biography) vis mindre
