- Sophie of Württemberg, Queen of the Netherlands, was born in Stuttgart, a daughter of King William I of Württemberg and his wife Grand Duchess Catherine Pavlovna of Russia. She was closely related to many royal families of Russia, Great Britain, and Europe. In 1839, she married her first cousin William, Prince of Orange, the future King William III of the Netherlands. She corresponded with several European scholars and other royals, patronized the arts, and supported several charities. Her letters have been published as A Stranger in The Hague: The Letters of Queen Sophie of the Netherlands to Lady Malet, 1842-1877 (1989).
