Albert E. Sloman

This is an account of the creation of the University of Essex that would buck the trend and aim for high numbers of students in the 1960s, i.e 10,000 students and above. Sloman, the vice-chancellor, through the Reith Lectures that formed the book, provides succinct words about the importance of libraries to a university, pages 60-62. On page 61 he states that 'A library is the university's heart. Weaken it and the health of the whole university is affected'. He has the foresight and vision to see the importance of new media: 'One can only deplore our tendency to dismiss out of hand any new tool as a gimmick invented by misguided tinkerers in education'.… (mere)
