This offers a survey of "good practice" in footbridge design from throughout the world, although most of the examples are from Europe.

The provisions of the various international standards and codes of practice are listed, although not comprehensively so - it would have benefited from a wider peer review. One omission is the issue of aerodynamics of covered footbridges, for example. On the other hand, there's extensive detail on pedestrian-induced dynamic excitation.

Although there's plenty of useful material here for the practising bridge designer, the second half of the bridge is the more interesting read. Three short sections provide a very useful introduction to stressed-ribbon, covered and moveable footbridges.

However, the final 35 pages of case studies provides the real treat. This covers a few of the classic modern footbridges (West India Quay, Solferino, Millennium, Gateshead, Suransuns) and plenty more truly inspirational but lesser known masterpieces.

Overall, the book is strictly for specialists, but indispensable if you're part of the target niche.
