I found this book reminiscent of [The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida], which I read first.
However, Lincoln in the Bardo was written earlier and therefore deserves the kudos for its original theme and story arc.
It is probably not a book I would choose to read, if it hadn't been a Booker winner. I have no regrets though, as I had little knowledge of Abraham Lincoln, coming from the Southern Hemisphere i.e. New Zealand.
I couldn't help being moved by Lincoln's grief at the death of his beloved 3rd son and it was an interesting and at times entertaining imagination of the afterlife. It was not as dark as [The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida]. The format is interesting and makes for quick reading as it is conveyed in the voices of the many souls in the graveyard with large spaces between each one's spoken word.… (mere)

This short story is 'written by Fox 8', which basically means the spelling is very bad and the language is tediously colloquial. The story is a simple sad tail by a fox who has seen their best friend beaten to death by humans and their home destroyed to make a shopping mall. It is probably a powerful simplistic call to arms to be kinder to the natural world, but for me the simple language and the brutal story did not quite land. I think I would rather read Watership Down again, the themes are similar but the storytelling more powerful and evocative.… (mere)

No rating as I didn't finish this one. The literary critics love it. Several of my reading friends have enjoyed it. It is unlike anything else I have ever read -- and it isn't working for me at all. Like, not one teeny, tiny bit. I have a galley and I wonder if my copy was somehow corrupted because it was truly bizarre.

Thank you to Random House and Netgalley for a galley of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Reading fiction changes the state of our minds for a short time afterward. [...] So, we might ask, how are we altered, in that "short time afterward"? [...] I am reminded that my mind is not the only mind. I feel an increased confidence in my ability to imagine the experiences of other people and accept these as valid. I feel I exist on a continuum with other people: what is in them is in me and vice versa. My capacity for language is reenergized. My internal language (the language in which I think) gets richer, more specific and adroit. I find myself liking the world more, taking more loving notice of it [...]. I feel luckier to be here and more aware that someday I won't be. I feel more aware of the things of the world and more interested in them. So, that's all pretty good.

Swim in a Pond was much more than I expected it to be. George Saunders not only makes a compelling case for what is deep and meaningful in the works of a handful of great 19th century Russian authors, he also explains what writing is for him—how it comes to be, what makes it so special, and how it can change one's life. This book is for anyone who wants to understand how technique, aesthetic, and meaning come together in the creative process. For those who don't write, it's an honest look into how a seemingly tedious process can produce something profound and life-altering.
